Externships are available in the

*must have 51 credit hours to participate

711 Law License

Under Illinois State Law, students studying
for the J.D. degree who have completed 51
credit hours are eligible to apply to the
Illinois Supreme Court for a 711 license,
which allows them to practice law in an
authorized setting under the direct
supervision of a licensed attorney.

711 Application forms are available at:

The Registrar's Office will sign a student's application form
once it verifies that the student has in fact successfully
completed the required 51.0 credit hours.
Students need not have the signature of a supervisor before
submitting the form to the Registrar for certification, although
this signature is necessary before the student can submit the
form to the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.
Students may submit a completed application form to the
Registrar in room 1430.

Jan. 27th - Feb. 10th you will be able to submit your
resume and transcript to apply for externships via
symplicity. Follow symplicity instructions handout.
If you want a specific site-apply individually. Remote
sites/extra application steps-apply on your own.
Must turn in Honor Statement to participate.
How to receive credit (2-3 credit
hours):




Follow checklist on website
Once you secure an externship, the first step is
completing the Externship Application and
Registration Form
Submit supervisor agreement, bi-weekly
evaluations, and final evaluation from supervisor
Attend class and successfully complete class
and on-site requirements
Time Requirements:



You are expected to work at the extern site a
minimum of 110 hours for two credits and 165
hours for three credits in addition to the other
requirements of this course.
You cannot receive credit for work performed as
an extern if you are also paid for that work.
You may receive 2 or 3 hours extern credit per
semester, and a total of 6 hours of credit during
your law school career.
