FALL 2016 EXTERNSHIPS/INTENSIVE FIELD PLACEMENTS
FAST FACTS
EXTERNSHIPS FOR THE FALL 2016 SEMESTER ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL FULL-TIME SECOND AND
THIRD YEAR LAW STUDENTS. PART-TIME STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED 28 HOURS OF
ACADEMIC CREDIT MAY ALSO APPLY.
Securing an
Externship/Intensive
Field Placement
1.
Résumés and transcripts will be collected through Symplicity
beginning April 8, 2016. The closing date for collection is
April 14, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.
Judicial Only
2.
The law school will send these documents, on your behalf, to
those judges that it has a relationship with each semester before
the end of the month of April. Judges who participate in the
program will make the selections, interview (in person and by
telephone in some cases) and extend offers. While we advise the
judges of our internal deadline, their schedules vary with respect
to when they will begin the selection process. (Our application
deadline for the fall is July 15, 2016)
3.
If you are extended an offer, the expectation, (assuming no
conflicts of interest,) is that you will accept the first offer received
and decline other interviews for judicial field placements during
the relevant semester that may be pending. Students must honor
this commitment.
4.
Students working in chambers for a state court judge (Circuit
Court of Cook County) will need to disclose whether they also
will be working or intend to work in any other legal capacity to the
judge and the law school. Students may not work in other legal
capacity while working as an extern for a state court judge. This is
a directive from the Office of the Chief Judge for the Circuit Court
of Cook County. Conflicts should be disclosed in all cases with
prospective supervisors. Certain federal court district court and
magistrate judges may also have similar policies in place. It is
important that you disclose this information. Students may accept
a position with a law school faculty member as a research
assistant or as a tutor.
5.
THERE WILL BE A SEPARATE COLLECTION FOR THE
Spring 2017 SEMESTER.
6.
The instructions for the collection of student résumés and
transcripts is attached as Exhibit A to this document.

Application Process for all
other Extern Intensive
Field Placements
7.
Please review the website and Law School Announcements for
opportunities that may become available with judges independent
of this process. Students who have a relationship with a judge may
also apply directly to that judge or through that specific court’s
internal procedures. Please review the website for the court that
you are considering as a possible externship site.
8.
It is critical that students review the list of approved sites and law
school announcements regularly. Information regarding the site
and the process for application is listed there. In the majority of
cases, students apply directly to the approved site of their choice.
There are only a few exceptions. One important one is the
application process for Cook County. Students interested in
serving as an extern at the following sites apply directly to
Professor Josie M. Gough:











Cook County Bureau of Labor
Cook County Department of Revenue
Cook County Department of Risk Management
Cook County Commission on Human Rights and Ethics
Cook County Department of Homeland Security and
Emergency Management
Cook County Department of Revenue
Cook County Department of Risk Management
Cook County-Office of Commissioner Larry Suffredin
Cook County Office of EEO/AA
Cook County Office of the President
Cook County Bureau of Technology
Students interested in any of the placements listed above for the
for the fall semester should submit 2 copies of their cover letter,
résumé, and unofficial transcript to Professor Gough by personal
delivery no later than May 16, 2016. The cover letter should be
addressed to Professor Gough for all Cook County placements.
YOU MAY NOT CONTACT THE COUNTY DIRECTLY.
THIS WOULD BE A VIOLATION OF THE COUNTY’S
HIRING PROCESSES. This does not apply to the Office of the
Cook County State’s Attorney or Law Offices of the Public
Defender.

INSTRUCTIONS
You will need to follow the Symplicity instructions on uploading your resume and
transcript. You may upload ONE PAGE for your resume and ONE PAGE for your
transcript. These documents must be in pdf format. In order to do so, log on to
Symplicity by going to: https://law-luc-csm.symplicity.com/students
If you have technical issues with using Symplicity or these instructions, please
contact Professor Maureen Kieffer at mkieffer1@luc.edu.
All other questions regarding the externship program may be directed to
Professor Josie M. Gough at jgough@luc.edu.

Federal Bankruptcy Judges-Northern District of Illinois

Circuit Court of Cook County-Elder Law & Miscellaneous Remedies Division

Illinois Appellate Court
18th Judicial Circuit Court-DuPage County
2). Loyola mails packets of the materials to the various judges. The judges contact
the students they wish to interview. If you are offered a position, it is expected
that you will accept or reject the offer immediately. This practice permits the
various judges to conduct their extern hiring in an efficient manner. We do not
know the time frame judges will use in interviewing and extending offers nor can
we guarantee your choice of placement. If you are extended an offer, it is
expected that you will accept the offer unless conflicts exist.
3). Once you have accepted an offer to become a judicial extern, please follow the
steps on the externship website to apply and register for the course. An internal
application is required. It is available on the Experiential Learning website. All
applications must be returned to Professor Gough by the deadline,
July 15, 2016. If you have not secured a placement by this date but
you anticipate that an offer will be made and accepted you must
submit your application by this date.

Employment, co-curricular or extracurricular activities or volunteer responsibilities that present actual
or potential conflicts will not be approved. It is critical that you disclose any actual or potential conflicts
that would jeopardize your duty of confidentiality and loyalty owed to your prospective externship
placement. Students have a continuing obligation to update this section with the Course Instructor
during the semester you are engaged in an externship placement. Students who apply for a position
with the Circuit Court of Cook County may not also work in any other legal capacity (paid or unpaid)
while serving as an extern. Students may work as research assistants or as tutors on behalf of the law
school faculty. This information must be disclosed to the court and the law school.
In order to make those assessments, please answer the following series of questions.
1. Please indicate whether you will be employed or if you are working as a volunteer during the
semester. If the answer is yes, please also indicate where you are working/volunteering, the
nature of the work and the number of hours you will work/volunteer.
