Externship Opportunity- Summer and Fall 2016 Department of Homeland Security United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) The USCIS has openings for 3 law students per semester for the summer and/or fall 2016 interested in serving as externs with their office. Students will gain experience in immigration law in the areas of citizenship, asylum, and adjudication of petitions and applications. Students will draft briefs on visa petition appeals and research issues in immigration law and criminal law. Students may also have the opportunity to assist with federal litigation, primarily mandamus actions. Students will be rotated among the various departments within USCIS to observe citizenship, adjudications and asylum interviews, as well as to visit other components of DHS including ICE and CBP. Students must take the externship for course credit or if permitted through the Federal work study program or a public interest grant. Students are required to work a minimum of 15 hours a week and must be U.S. Citizens. Students who are compensated for their work may not also obtain academic credit.
