Master Gardeners were conceived by the extension agent in Snohomish County,
Washington, in 1972 to assist him with the growing requests from urban farmers
in that area. Today Master Gardener programs exist in every state and in six
Canadian provinces. It is a program designed to "grow" volunteers that
contribute thousands of volunteer hours in their communities by planting and
maintaining public gardens, conducting research, and speaking on gardening
issues.
