Key Stage 4 and Beyond 2016 Thursday 28th January The Future • • • • University Truro College Apprenticeships Jobs and careers What do students need? 8 good passes and a broad range of choices The New Specification GCSE Grades The current indication is that students sitting their English and Mathematics GCSE in 2017 4 = C. However in 2018 a good pass will be a 5 or better. Students will be expected to achieve a 6 or better to follow an A level qualification. Progress and Attainment 8 Although colleges have not set targets for the entry to their courses they could do in the future to replace the 5 Good GCSE passes. The ‘English Baccalaureate’ It is not a qualification in itself and at present there are no plans for a certificate to be issued to a student who successfully completes the English Baccalaureate. However it does recognise students’ achievement in the published league tables across a core of selected academic subjects in getting grade 5 passes in 5 GCSE subjects: English Mathematics 2 Sciences History or Geography German or French or Spanish Overview of Process • KS4 & Beyond Information Evening for students and parents on Thursday 28th January • A taster course for vocational courses at Truro College takes place on Thursday 24th February • There is a Parents’ Consultation Evening on Thursday 3rd March • The Choices Form, upon which you will make your choices, will be issued on Monday 1st February. Please return it to your tutor by Friday 8th February. A letter confirming your KS4 courses will be sent home to parents following scrutiny of the courses chosen and checking their viability. Choice • Choose option subjects because the pupil thinks they’ll be good at them, and they will be interested in them. • If they’re not sure what they might want to take at university, ensure they’ve got a good mix of GCSE subjects – they could follow the English Baccalaureate model (taking English, maths, double science, history or geography and a modern language) • Don’t choose subjects because they want to be with a best friend or a particular teacher - their friendship may not last and the teacher may be working with a different group! • If they’re already thinking about a particular type of course, take a look at the entry requirements for specific courses at university and work back from there. Advice and Guidance • Individual Interviews Starting 22nd February once option blocks are formed • Mrs Sherwood and Mrs Donnelly are here to help with advice with careers • The library • PSHE lessons • Truro College – what do you need for the next step?
