Formatting
Pictures can be in JPG, GIF or PNG formats. JPG is designed for photos. GIF is good for
graphics, where there are flat colours (JPGs will add “artifacts” to flat plains of colour, giving
a “blurred” or “dirty” look to the image. PNG is a kind of “improved” GIF.
Images taken straight from a digital camera shouldn't be put straight onto the web site. They
will need to be cropped and resized as appropriate before being uploaded to the site. The
pixels per inch should be set to 96 pixels. Higher values are for printing, and the extra data
will be “wasted” on the web. It's unlikely you'll ever need to add an image onto the web site
that is larger than 500px (pixels) by 500px.
The system has an image file size limit of 500Kb. In most cases this should be more than
adequate.
Right-clicking on an image will give you a menu with “Image Properties” on it (if you are an
Apple Mac user it is Ctrl+click). This gives you options to “fine tune” the alt text, add a
caption to the picture, or set the alignment of the picture.
