ABSTRACT
This report deals with the design and construction of traffic light control system using a
microcontroller and sensor.
This project is intended for a highway T-junction; hence, three sets of LEDs (red, amber and
green) are used on each side of the road. In addition to these LEDs, three bi-colour LEDs was
inserted to cater for the pedestrian. The sets of LEDs are programmed to turn on or off in
sequence for the T-junction highway. The general sequence is programmed into the
microcontroller which continues as long as the traffic level in the route is low. With the help
of an infra red sensor connected along the three routes, the normal sequence is altered
whenever the sensor indicates that the traffic level at a particular route is high. When the
traffic level at another route is high, the route being passed at present is suspended (red LED
goes on), and the green LED at the busy route goes on
