Industrial Technology Session V: Applications, Regulations & Challenges Speaker Ulrich Kohn, Director Network Solutions and Marketing – Enterprise Networks, Ericsson, Germany Educated by the Technical University in Stuttgart Ulrich Kohn began his professional career in 1987 at ANT (later Bosch Telecom Public Networks) in Backnang, Germany, as a research engineer on photonic transport systems. His successful work resulted in establishing the new product segment for Optical Amplifiers in Backnang. Ulrich Kohn was assigned responsibility for development and technical sales of this product family. In 1998 his responsibility was extended by embracing the complete portfolio of wireline transport products and by heading Business Development of Marconi’s Optical Networks group in Germany . In 2001 Ulrich Kohn was founding member of Marconi ONDATA, a high-tech spin-off from Marconi. He held the position Director Business Development and Marketing. In 2003 Ulrich Kohn joined the Chief Technology Office and among others was in charge of transport solutions for Mobile Network Operators. After Ericsson acquired Marconi in early 2006 Ulrich Kohn held various leading Network Strategy roles. In early 2007 he was appointed Director Network Solutions and Marketing for Enterprise customers in CEMA market regions. Presentation Title “How Oil & Gas Industry Benefits from Innovation in Communication Networks” The increasing demand for hydrocarbons creates a need to intensify exploration and to develop previously uneconomic oil & gas fields. Advanced drilling, monitoring and visualization technologies form basis for efficient exploration and production. But the benefits of those technologies can only be gained if cooperation and collaboration between on-site and off-site experts is supported by efficient communication systems. Thus, the operational efficiency of oil and gas companies is closely linked to their ability to access data and video streams in a secure and reliable way but also to have voice communication at any place and at any time. The implementation of communication systems is challenged by the large geographical area, a lack of infrastructure (transmission media or communication systems) and in some cases extreme environmental conditions. It needs to be noted, that telecommunication is not only required for improving the operational efficiency but is also essential for the security of the workforce and the assets. This presentation analyses communication needs at remote exploration sites and outlines how those needs can be met in an economic, secure and future proof way by applying standardized, scalable and flexible network solutions. It describes, how latest mobile technologies in combination with advanced backhauling solutions create a new benchmark, against which existing solutions should be measured. It also looks at alternatives in implementing those systems and compares self-provided solutions and partnering models. H.E.
