Using the 1923 handout, determine the percentage of population change for each county between 1900 and
1920. Write the percentage change in the column (Remember, some numbers may be negative).
To determine percentage change, use the following equation:
(1900 Population – 1920 Population) X 100

Once you have the percentages calculated, use the following key to color your map of Wisconsin. Don’t
forget to write the key in the space provided on the map. Menominee County was a part of Shawano
County in 1920, so color Menominee the same as Shawano.
Decrease of more than 10%
Decrease of -10 – 0%
Increase of 0 – 15%
Increase of 15 – 30%
Increase of 30 – 45%
Increase of more than 45%
Once your map is colored, answer the following questions:

What county had the highest percentage drop in population?
What percentage was it?

What might be some reasons for the drop in population?
