Vocabulary – Week 2
Academic Vocabulary -I will provide definitions for these terms throughout the week. Make sure to
copy them into your Glossary (at the back of your composition book).
Summarize (v.) – to state the main idea and major supporting points of an entire text in one or
two sentences
Paraphrase (v.) – to rephrase a short section of text in one’s own words
Origin Myth (n.) – a traditional story that explained how life began
Archetype (n.) – pattern, symbol, or character types that repeat across cultures
Infer (v.) – to conclude from evidence and/or reasoning rather than from explicit statement
Reading Vocabulary
-As you complete the week’s reading, make sure to notice these words in
context and copy them in to your Glossary (at the back of your composition book).
The entry should include (1) the word, (2) the part of speech, (3) the definition (choose the one that
makes sense with the reading), and (4) the sentence or phrase that it appears in (its context).
