Approach to Training
Annie’s Project Key Principles
• Courses focus on risk management
• Allocate half of class to discussion and hands-on
activities
• Invite local professionals to serve as guest
instructors
• Provide un-biased, research based information
• Create a learning environment where mentoring is
spontaneous

Approach to Training
Annie’s Project Core Values
• Safe Harbor
– All questions or situations are welcomed for open discussion
• Connection
– To each other and to professionals introduced in class
• Discovery
– The moment when something makes sense where before it did not
• Guided Intelligence
– At any one time there is a woman in the audience who knows more
about the subject being presented than the instructor and is willing to
share her experience

Elements of Evaluation Design
• Pre, Post and Follow-up Instruments
• ID codes assigned with no link to participant
names
• Responses matched by ID codes
• Responses aggregated by ID codes for location
• Evaluation Guide with procedures/protocols for
facilitators and coordinators

Instrument Design
• Content Validity
– Developed by experts in the field
– Matched to curriculum content
– Revised after curriculum revision
• Pilot tested and revised
– Example: Asked for estimate of accuracy of precourse knowledge responses on Post. Eliminated
these questions based on high degree of reliability.

Guiding Principles for Reporting
• First, do no harm: protect participant identities
• Aggregate results: small samples have low value
and risk identifying individuals
• Don’t report ‘comparisons’ unless tested
statistically
• Think ‘security clearance level’: share only what is
appropriate for the intended audience:
– Raw results for course facilitator and project leaders
– Summarized results for participants, funding agency
– Key findings for funding agency, partners, public

Use of Reporting
• Facilitator: Aggregated responses from Pre and from Post
– Pre: Tailor course to participant prior knowledge, operation types
– Post: Participant feedback for improving facilitation skills in future
courses
• Presenter: Abbreviated facilitator report
– Pre: Tailor presentation to participant prior knowledge, operation
types
• Project Leaders: Copies of facilitator and presenter reports by
location and by state and/or grant project

–
Monitor quality, professional development needs
Add/Revise course content/materials
Summarize findings/impact for project reports
Use results to seek funding and/or continue sponsorship

Lessons Learned
• Participants significantly increased their knowledge in
each transition area: business, estate, retirement and
succession.
• Discussion time was too limited:
– Increased the class from 4 to 5 sessions (15 hours)
• Course flow and homework was somewhat hard to
follow:
– Improved suggested syllabus, and made the priority homework
and reasons for it more clear
www.extension.iastate.edu/annie

at Iowa State University Extension
Lessoned Learned
• Some curricula content
was too detailed, while
other content was not
detailed enough:
– Edited content based on
educator and participant
feedback
– Added a 50-min. block
specifically on Insurance
(general, life &
property/casualty)
