Academic Job Summary

Specific Responsibilities of Position

For example:
 To work as a member of the School team to develop the new undergraduate
chemical engineering degree programme in Singapore.
 To contribute to teaching of chemical engineering at undergraduate level and
specifically to the teaching of transport processes, separation processes,
process safety or sustainability.
 To supervise undergraduate Chemical Engineering design projects and build
links with local industry to bring design awareness to students.
 To participate in the management and administration of the degree programme
and all modules within the School, and where appropriate contribute to the
development of new initiatives in these areas.
 To conduct research in the discipline, both independently and as a member of a
team, and to publish the outcome of that research in peer reviewed
publications.
 To attract funding for research from a range of sources.
 To supervise students undertaking postgraduate degrees by research in these
same subject areas.

Knowledge (inc. Qualifications)
Essential
 A Good Honours degree in relevant subject
 PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject
 In-depth subject knowledge/expertise in specific area of scholarship
Desirable
 Academic teaching qualification
 A relevant professional qualification or Masters degree
Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical)
Essential
 Potential to achieve international standing in research within a few years
through obtaining grant and research contract awards, leading journal
publications and conference participation
 High level of analytical and problem-solving capability, with the personal skills,
initiative and drive to achieve the solution
 Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing
 Demonstrable potential to develop and deliver innovative and effective teaching
and learning materials
 Ability to engage with and respond enthusiastically and positively to students
 The ability to engage counselling skills and pastoral care where appropriate
 Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with both academic colleagues
and support staff to encourage the commitment of others
 The ability to persuade and influence at all levels in order to foster and maintain
relationships, resolving tensions/difficulties as they arise
 Good networking skills and the ability to develop productive links with fellow
professionals from other organisations and agencies with whom the University
interacts, notably representatives of organisations funding or collaborating in
research and professional bodies and societies
 High level of planning, organisational and administrative skills
 Effective time management and prioritisation skills to balance the potentially
conflicting demands of teaching, research and administration; and the ability to
meet deadlines
 Excellent IT skills

 Evidence of developing a quality publication record for the discipline,
demonstrating potential for peer reviewed publications at international level
 Evidence of developing research proposals and seeking research funding
 Able to meet the University’s standard for submission to the Research
Excellence Framework
 A clear, ambitious yet realistic vision for their research that represents a good fit
with the aims of the academic unit
 Experience of presentation of work to the national/international research
community (at conferences, seminars and similar high profile events)

 Evidence of a developing national reputation in research
 Proven delivery of research outcomes to a defined timescale
 Evidence of having initiated interdisciplinary collaborations
 Evidence of success in collaborative research
 Experience of teaching or lecturing undergraduate and postgraduate students
