Approval of Minutes Discussion: a) The minutes were approved for the Cultural Competence and Equity Committee meeting on October 14, 2010. 2. Cultural Events Proposal Sub-Committee Update Discussion: The committee discussed the request for food as a component of the indigenous people’s week proposal. After much dialog it was recommended that we provide seed money so the supplies could be purchased – but that the account would need to be reimbursed out of the sales. 3. Book Sale Discussion: The committee edited and approved the flyer. Kathy will be sending out an email asking for volunteers. Christina indicated that many students had volunteered to help with all phases of the book sale. Kathy also indicated that book donations have been going OK – but we definitely need more books. 4. Cultural Events Proposal Training Update Discussion: Kathryn indicated that there was one attendee at the cultural events proposal training. The training indicated the need to clarify the definition of a cultural event to the campus community and to make it clear that we can pay travel costs for presenters (in addition to or in place of stipends). COSUMNES RIVER COLLEGE Cultural Competence and Equity Committee Meeting Minutes October 28, 2010 1:00 – 2:30 PM LRC 125 5. Discussion: 6. Discussion: Review of the Cultural Competence Definition Committee members reviewed the current definition and made several recommendations, including moving the basic definition of cultural competence closer to the beginning of the narrative. The committee also recommended that the continuum information and perspective (that cultural competence is not a destination but a journey) be included in both the value and the definition part of the statement. It was also suggested that the definition should communicate that cultural competence incorporates skills, attitude and knowledge that allow us to use our awareness of the dynamics of cultural differences to be a more effective organization. The committee also suggested using the wording from the cultural proficiency definition in the statement. Finally, there is a need to clarify the meaning of embracing – does it mean acknowledging and respecting? Convocation and FLEX brainstorming The committee agreed that we should host another storytelling workshop with at most 3 panel members. It was suggested that we recruit participants at large via email and our personal networks – and perhaps by talking with previous participants. If more people volunteer than can be accommodated at the workshop, then we can schedule story telling workshops during the semester.
