Homemade Lip Balm

Description: Lip Balm protects your lips from chapping and the harsh effects of dry air, wind, sun and cold. Lip balm can be made as a one day class or a daily session of a bath and body class at camp.

Goal: To make a homemade lip balm using natural ingredients.

Objectives:

1.

To learn how a lip balm is made.

2.

To learn the ingredients in this beauty and skin protection item.

3.

To learn how to add additives for coloring and scent.

Materials:

Beeswax

Microwave safe container for melting beeswax

 ¼ teaspoon of grated lipstick (if desire color)

Essential oil of choice

Procedure:

1. Melt the base ingredients in the microwave or in a double boiler. Don't overheat: watch carefully, use small increments of microwave time, and heat only until just melted.

2. Use only cosmetic grade Beeswax. Beeswax is usually available in white or yellow pellets or solid blocks.

3. Melt two teaspoons of beeswax with two tablespoons of sweet almond oil or Coconut oil.

Color, if desired, by adding 1/4 teaspoon grated lipstick. Set aside until lukewarm.

4. Then add 5 to 6 drops of essential oil. Puncture a Vitamin E capsule and add two drops to the balm mixture.

5. Stir ingredients together.

6. Then pour into a lip balm pot. Suggested essential oils include peppermint, orange, lemon or coconut.
