Multimedia Streaming in Home Networks Professor Parmesh Ramanathan Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Wisconsin, Madison Abstract Home networks are increasingly being used for many challenging applications such as audio/video streaming and interactive gaming. These applications usually involve multicasting the stream from a media server to multiple consoles over a heterogeneous mix of wireless and wired links (e.g., Ethernet, HomePlug AV, IEEE 802.11). Since home networks do not have the advantage of large-scale traffic aggregation, there is usually considerable fluctuations in the amount of bandwidth available in the network for these applications. In this talk, I will describe some of our recent work that exploits techniques such as rate adaptation, layered coding, and network coding to combat the challenges of home networks. Biography Parameswaran Ramanathan received the B. Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India in 1984 and the M. S. E. and the Ph. D. degrees from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Since 1989, he has been a faculty member at University of Wisconsin, Madison where he is presently a Full Professor and Department Chair. His research interests are in the areas of sensor networks, wireless ad hoc networks, mobile computing, fault-tolerant computing, real-time systems, and distributed systems. Support for his work has come from federal agencies such as National Science Foundation, DARPA, US Army and industries such Cisco, AT&T, Telcordia Technologies, Johnson Controls, and Chrysler Motors Corporation.
