Standard Seven: The pre-service teacher models effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. Performance Indicator 7.4: uses a variety of media communication tools. Artifact: Landform Review PowerPoint Course: Student Teaching Rationale: Standard 7.4 requires the pre-service teacher to use a variety of media communication tools. This artifact was used as a review prior to an assessment on landforms. The PowerPoint displays a photograph of a landform. Students are then called on to identify and define the landform. As the teacher advances the PowerPoint presentation, the landform name and definition are displayed to provide immediate feedback. Reflection: Throughout my education coursework, I was called on to create PowerPoint presentations. The practice I garnered with the PowerPoint program proved quite beneficial while student teaching. I was surprised how often I used PowerPoint presentations as a teaching tool. The presentations captivated the students’ attention and became an easy way to visually present information. To enhance this artifact, I would like to find clearer photographs of the landforms. For instance, the photographs of the peninsula and bay were difficult for the students to identify. Furthermore, I would allow more time to present the landform review. With only ten minutes allotted for the review, the end became a bit rushed. Fifteen minutes would have allowed sufficient time to discuss all landforms. In my classroom, I will convey information using PowerPoint presentations as well as other media communication tools such as overhead projectors, video, audio, and the Smart Board.
