IGDS SHORT COURSE JULY 2015 LOOKING IN: LOOKING OUT Gender in the News with Dr. Sue Ann Barratt One Day | Tuesday 28 July 2015 | 9:00-5:00 P.M. | IGDS Seminar Room, The UWI, St. Augustine About the short course This course is designed to enhance the level of gender consciousness in news media products. Through discussion and interrogation of select published articles, it helps journalists to hone their analytical and writing skills. Journalists are able to reflect on the representation of gender issues, the accuracy of such representations and strategies to be used to avoid misrepresentations which often are the result of sensationalist texts designed to increase sales. At the end of the workshop participants should be able to identify and evaluate gender identities and issues within a context or text and produce texts which are not only accurate but do not bias or damage any gender. research on Social media in the Caribbean, Cultural Studies particularly Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, Body Image and Identity, and the use of Sexist and Non-Sexist Language. Why should I take this course? This workshop targets working print journalists especially. However, broadcast and other journalists are welcome. It enables you, through reflexive analysis, to evaluate your writing not only for its adherence to journalistic standards but its professional and non-sexist approach to gender issues. You will enhance the level of gender consciousness in your writing especially as you work in a space and place constantly negotiating changing gender norms and practices. About the lecturer Dr. Sue-Ann Barratt Sue Ann Barratt is a scholar of Communication and Gender Studies. Her main academic work elaborates on Gender Identity and Interpersonal Communication Conflict in the Caribbean.
