with
Dr. Angelique V. Nixon
Monday 20 to Thursday 23 July, 2015— 4:00-8:00 P.M.
IGDS Seminar Room, The UWI, St. Augustine Campus
About the short course
Who should take this course?
This is a short course on sexuality theory and
research methodologies relevant to the Anglophone
Caribbean with a particular focus on sexual and
gender minorities. It will include an overview of the
field and will address topics such as sex, gender and
sexuality, social construction of sexual identities,
politics and public policy, and sexual rights. Sessions
will include discussion and group work as well as
lectures.
Undergraduates, postgraduates and staff in all faculties –
the social sciences, the humanities, law, medicine, etc. –
with a strong interest in the topic are encouraged to
register, regardless of previous experience with
sexuality studies.
Learning Objectives
• Develop understanding of sexuality and sexualities
and research methods in the field of Critical
Sexuality Studies
• Reflect on work experiences in relation to
researching or theorizing sexuality
• Critique biologically determinist understandings of
sex, gender and sexuality
• Examine the interrelationship between sex,
sexuality and gender through consideration of
heteronormativity and sexual/gendered inequity
• Develop a critical understanding of sexual identity
as socially constructed in relations of discourse and
power
• Understand the origins/basis of Caribbean sexual
identity and bring together perspectives on culture
and sexuality
• Analyze the development of Caribbean
sexuality/sexualities based on the development of
the region’s sexual cultures.
Practitioners, teachers, media professionals, and/or
activists who work with community organizations,
NGOs, or the government are also encouraged to
register.
