General Objectives

The students will:

1. use effective research and information management skills

2. analyze and make critical judgments about all forms of communication, separating fact from opinion, recognizing propaganda, stereotypes and statement of bias, recognizing inconsistencies and judging the validity of evidence.

3. exchange information orally, including understanding and giving spoken instructions, asking and answering question appropriately, and promoting effective group communication.

4. compose and make oral presentations for each academic area of study that are designed to persuade, inform and describe.

5. evaluate, infer and draw conclusions from charts, tables, and graphs, showing the relationships between data and real-world situations.

6. demonstrate their skills of communication, negotiating, and cooperating with others.

7. recognize and demonstrate the ability to apply dietary guidelines to meet nutritional needs at various stages of life.

8. understand the benefits associated with physical fitness and good personal health habits including health promotion and disease prevention.

9. identify the advantages of avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse.

10. demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to work cooperatively in team sports or other developmentally appropriate group activities.

Introduction

A student must earn one credit in Health & Physical Education as a freshman, and one credit as a sophomore, as a part of their graduation requirements at Hazleton Area School

District. All freshmen students will be scheduled for physical education 44 days, Health 22 days, and swimming for 22 days. The students overall grade will be made up of a combination of their health and physical education grades.

My basic philosophy is to provide a variety of activities that will promote and encourage lifetime fitness. Through this type of exposure I am confidant students will understand the benefits of exercise, healthy behaviors and the impact it can have on their health.

Classroom Rules

1.

Show respect for yourself, others and the school.

2.

Do things that do not prevent the teacher from teaching and do not prevent yourself or others from learning.

3.

Come prepared for class every day.

4.

Electronics are not to be used or seen in class.

5.

Raise your hand to answer or ask a question.

Class Policy

Testing: All major tests will be announced at least two days in advance. Students who are present on test day and knew about the test must take it.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given periodically to check student progress. They may or may not be announced.

Homework: Homework is given to reinforce class material and will be collected. If homework is not completed on time, your grade will be negatively affected. Parents will be notified if homework is not being completed.

Classwork: Each student must have a notebook and take notes during class. Students will participate in all class activities. Only Health class material will be worked on during health class.

Absences: Students will have the number of days absent plus one day to make-up missed work. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher.

Appropriate accommodations will be made for each student as needed.

Students that DO NOT wear the appropriate clothing/sneakers or DO NOT participate in their physical education class will receive a zero for the particular day of the occurrence.

Medical Excuses

If a student cannot participate in the regular course of study for an extended period of time a medical excuse is required. Depending on the nature of the injury or illness an alternate activity may be advised to meet the needs of the student with permission from the physician.
