Exchange semester: Fall 2013

I. PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before leaving Norway

After applying for the exchange semester it didn’t take a long time before I received information from CBS. Already on 14 th

of March I received a welcome email from the international office at CBS where I was informed about the process before leaving Norway. In addition, the email contained information about the documents that needed to be submitted and a link to the homepage of CBS where I could find all the undergraduate courses that was available. The registration flow for undergraduate courses opened early May and the deadline was May 14 th

.

Travel

There are a lot of ways to travel to Denmark, and I have during the semester abroad tried them all. The fastest way is naturally by plane, and Norwegian.no has more than seven daily trips from Oslo to Copenhagen. The prices vary depending on when you make a reservation. If you buy a ticket more than 3 weeks ahead you can find tickets as low as 299,- NOK one way, and the closer you get to the desired date of departure, the more expensive the tickets get. The second alternative is to travel by bus. This is a good alternative if you haven’t planned and suddenly want to travel to Norway. The prices are very low (approx. 249,- NOK) and do not vary as much as airplane tickets. However, the bus takes 8 hours and it isn’t the most comfortable way to travel. The third alternative is to travel by boat with DFDS. I did this once mainly because they had a special offer (150 NOK) for return tickets. This also takes some

time, but is far more comfortable than traveling by bus. You should therefore enlist to DFDS’ newsletter by email where you receive information about the special offers.

Housing

Housing is provided by CBS. However, due to the large amount of international exchange students it is not easy to get housing through CBS. In addition, they prioritize students that come from other continets than Europe so the chances to get housing as a Norwegian student is relatively small. There are, however, websites like www.bolig.dk/ where there are many private appartments for rent, but you should start early as it is not so easy to find a appartments in Copenhagen. I was very lucky and found my apartment through the international office at BI. They received an email from Norwegian students that study at CBS and that was going on exchange aswell, so the international office forwaded this email to me and already in April I found my apartment. Howere, as I said I was very lucky so you shouldn’t rely on this happening. You could also try www.housinganywhere.com/ which is a student-to-student housing platform.

Costs

This is approximately how much I spent on the different areas per month.

Rent

Books*

5800 NOK

2500 NOK

Food 3000 NOK

Transport 450 NOK

Other 1000 NOK

* Only semester start

Prices are generally cheaper in Denmark, especially food and beverages. It is also a lot cheaper to go out to eat. However, the prices vary depending on which are of the city the restaurant is. You can probably find an apartment that is cheaper than 5800 NOK, mine was in Islands Brygge which is one of the most costly areas to live in.

II. ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The school is located in Fredriksberg which is a very nice are outside the city centre. It takes approximately 10 minutes with the metro to get there from Kongens Nyhavn metro station

(city centre). However, it does not take more than 20 minutes to bike there from the city centre. The area around the school is very nice, there is a big park (Fredriksberg Have) 200 metres from the school and also Copenhagen Zoo is close to the park. Furthermore, there is a lot of good restaurants and a big shopping centre right outside the school.

The facilities at CBS are good, especially the canteen, which really is one of the best you can find. The school is quit big and is spread around different areas in Fredriksberg. The main building (Solbjerg) is where I had most of my clases. Here is also the biggest library but it is very popular so you normally have to reserve a seat one day ahead. Kilen is the next building and is 200 metres away from Solbjerg, this is the most modern building of CBS and quit similar to BI. Further down the road close to Lindevang metro station you find the third building (Dalgas Have) which is an older building with smaller classrooms, typically for 20-

30 students. There are two more buildings Fasanvej and Flintholm. Fasanvej has a very nice library that few students know about but is a longer way to walk from the metro.

Course registration

The course registration opened on the 2 nd

of May and the deadline was 14 th

of May. After registration, which is very easy, it takes 4-6 weeks before you get information on which of the courses you have been assigned. The courses are not assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning that you have until the deadline to finish your registration, without the risk of not being first in line for your course choices.

The firs add/drop period startet 1 st

of August and ended the 8 th

of August. I personally didn’t change anything during this round, as I was satisfied with the courses I got from the initial request. The second , and the final, add/drop period starts 26 st of August and ends Sepetember the 10 th

. Here you have a very good opportunity to try out different courses, as the semester has started. However, do not trust all the profesors during these days, as some of them may

pretend like the course is more interestind than it really is. You should use the CBS calendar planer to see if courses run at the same time.

You wil receive an email to purchase tickets for the social package during July. This package will include events such as Meet ‘N’ Mingle, Danish Folk Dancing, several parties, Movie Night and

Welcome Dinner. The price for the Introduction Week Social Package was 550 DKK.

The International Office

The international office at CBS was very good at sending information all the time and also relevant information. They were also very helpful when you got in contact with them.

III. ACADEMICS

In the classroom

The workload at CBS is much the same as at BI. Classes are generally smaller, and in most of my classes we where 30-40 students. Therefore, there is much more interaction in classrooms with teachers and students. Most of the profesors are informal in style, and the letctures are alo very practical with many cases.

Practical and interesting level is reommended

Comments:

Finance Management is a very practical course that only last for the first part of the semester. We had only lectures the first month, so it can be a bit intensive. Already in November we started with the mini-project (10 pages) which was a part of the examination. Our project was a valuation of SAS airlines, and if Lufthans should buy them (SAS). This became a very interesting way of learning finance. Instead of only learning formulas and theory we got to apply them and use the theory. We handed in our project October 25 th . After that we had approximately 3 week to study for the oral exam, which is a 20 minute examination where you get questions about the syllabus and the miniproject.

Managing People

Bachelor Written product and oral exam

None Elective Theoretical

Comments:

This course is quit theoretical with many articles and different book. However, the lectures are very practical with a lot of discussion and especially with a critic view on HR and the function it plays in organisations. The lecturer was very enthusiastic and really knew what he was talking about. I have genereally not liked qualitative courses, but after this course my view on that has changed. The examination is firstly a 5 page essay you have to hand in, you can choose the topic from a list of given problem statements. After the essay you have some weeks before the oral exam which last for

20 minutes and where you get questioned about the topic in your essay and the rest of the syllabus.

Practical

Comments:

Coprporate strategy was a very practical course where we had a new case for each lecture. In addition, the lecturer was very professional and had many interesting examples from the real life. We had a 72 hours home assignment where we had to write 10 pages. There was from students presentations every lecture and this was a very practical way of learning strategy, instead of only readin theory we got to apply it on different cases.

Elective Practical

Comments:

This is the most practical course I had during my semester abroad. It is mainly based on discussions in class and not a lot of reading. However, I must admit that I was a bit disappointed about the quality of the course. The examination is held as an oral exam that last for 20 minutes where you hold a presentation on a topic you are given ahead of the examination.

The semester aborad at Copenhagen Business school was a very good experience for me.

Eventhough, Copenhagen is not so far away from Oslo, the exchange experience made me go out of my comfort zone. Instead of following routine here at BI, I got to learn how people study and live other places. Furthermore, I got to meet a lot of new people from all around the world and learn about their cultures. I am definitively sure that this experience will play a positive part in my future career posibilitites. I have already got a new job, and during the interview they was very positive about the fact that I took my exchange semester at CBS. It was also wonderful to live in the beautiful city Copenhagen, which is really a great city.
