Tips for Addressing SACS Standards

The following is a list of tips for addressing each standard. This list is provided as a general overview of items to consider as you make revisions or edits to your narratives.

Alignment (horizontal) – When appropriate, think about the specific program or department and its congruency with SPC’s mission and goals; sometimes this can be effectively illustrated in a table.

Alignment (vertical or top down) – Start with the national organization (USDOE) or accrediting body and then move to state (FLDOE) and then consider the SPC BOT rule and how this becomes the policy.

Be specific – When specifying quantity, provide an exact number or percentage. Use adjectives that can be backed up with data – as example: We have an award-winning or nationally

accredited program rather than we have an excellent program.

Use the Questions for Consideration (from the SACS resource manual) as a guide to your narrative and make sure you have addressed all of these questions.

Go back and review the original standard and make sure every single word is addressed.

Use position titles when appropriate rather than actual names of the individuals involved.

Watch grammar/spelling.

Be aware of duplicate information – you need to say it once.

Make sure you have required documentation as suggested by the resource manual.
