Topics:
I)
General
A) Change of meeting day to 2nd and 4th Tuesday, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
B) Janice and Lynn will meet about SPOL on Friday, 2/13
II) Student Success
A) Janice met with Student Activity Coordinators and Associate Provosts on 2/4
B) Into the Wild & Critical Thinking – Gail, Carol, and Janice are planning a
get-together on Tuesday, 2/17, 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the EpiCenter in 2-423 to
facilitate a brainstorming session with Student Activity Coordinators,
Librarians, and Faculty in order to help fine tune the activities that are being
planned to ensure they engage students in critical thinking.
C) Janice will request a list of what’s happened around the campuses in order to
update the Web site (also, photos, sign-in sheets, agendas, etc.)
D) Question from Tonjua Williams: With the QEP is there an expectation that
each year, student activities will perform collegewide critical thinking
activities? Answer: It's not required that there be college-wide critical
thinking student activities, or even events held on each campus. The plan
encourages events, and only "assesses" them by keeping a list and head-count
of student participants.
III) Professional Development
A) 2008 Academic Round Tables and Faculty Champions
1) Janice sent an ART Beach Retreat follow-up message to Faculty
Champions.
2) Lynn will help follow-up in order to attain completed Instructional
Portfolios.
B) 2009 Academic Round Tables and Faculty Champions
1) Janice sent an ART Beach Retreat follow-up message to Faculty
Champions.
C) Holly Hoopes has received her reimbursement check to attend the online
Sonoma Course. Janice will follow-up to build modules with Holly.
D) Carol Weideman’s amended TAR has been approved. Janice has completed a
check request to reimburse Carol’s $350.00 registration. The paperwork has
been signed by Anne Cooper and it is on its way to Mark Passmore.
E) Faculty Champion and Academic Round Table Retreat – 1/30
1) Attended by approximately 30 faculty.
2) SPOC sets, Thinkers’ Guides, and Critical Thinking Collections were
distributed to Faculty Champions.
3) Janice sent thank you letters.
4) Janice sent Certificates of Attendance and photo.
5) Janice has submitted an article for the Blue & White which was approved
by Anne Cooper:
The first annual retreat for Academic Round Tables (ARTs) focusing on critical
thinking was held on Friday, January 30 at the Civitan Beach Club on Redington
Shores Beach. The event was attended by 35 faculty members and staff, and featured

presentations by Gail Lancaster, Carol Weideman, Lynn Grinnell, Jesse Coraggio,
and Janice Thiel on “Learning Communities,” “Assessment,” “Instructional
Portfolios,” “Assessment Rubric for Critical Thinking (ARC),” and “Faculty
Champion Guide” respectively.
During the morning session, Faculty Champions and ART members from Early
Childhood, the College of Education, Ethics, and Student Life Skills reflected on the
past year’s efforts and began drafting a Portfolio Report. Faculty Champions and
ART members from Business Technologies, the College of Nursing, Communication,
Library, and Paralegal spent the afternoon session gearing up for the year ahead,
particularly the completion of an Instructional Portfolio for their discipline.
Events like the ART retreat and Critical Thinking Institutes help bring SPC closer to
fulfilling the initiatives of the Quality Enhancement Plan aimed at improving our
students’ ability to think critically. Upcoming events include the college-wide Quality
Enhancement Committee meeting on February 27 and the Spring Critical Thinking
Institute which will be held in conjunction with the Narrowing the Gulf conference on
March 26 and 27. Please contact Janice Thiel for more information.
6) Evaluation results generally positive.
QEC Meeting
1) Friday, February 27, 1:00-3:00, District Office-143TR
2) 8 have RSVPed thus far. Janice will send a reminder next week.
3) Agenda
(a) First Half – Quick Update and Introduce Faculty Champions.
(b) Second Half – Subcommittees and Faculty Champions will meet.
G) Spring Critical Thinking Institute (Narrowing the Gulf) March 26-27, 2009
1) Dinner with David Sousa Wednesday, March 25, 6:00 p.m. (Location
TBD) – Janice has invited: Earl Fratus, Nancy Watkins, Chad Mairn,
Lynn Grinnell, and Carol Weideman for Peg Connell. Chad and Nancy
have indicated interest.
H) Faculty Champion Guide
1) Janice has created two tutorials to help Faculty Champions: “The Basics”
and “Deliverables.” Janice has added Lynn’s Management and Carol’s
Statistics ARC scenarios as examples to the March ARC scenario
deliverable. Janice will continue to work on content for March through
December.
2) Gail will use Camtasia to create an RLO about the interactive model of
critical thinking.
3) Jesse Coraggio will produce a video on the ARC and assessment on ?
Critical Thinking Resources
A) Gateway Website
1) Janice has a teleconference scheduled with Faith Ocasio to resynchronize
her Dreamweaver with the site, and Janice will follow-up with
edits/revisions/additions ASAP.
B) RLO’s – Karen Hesting contacted Nancy Doolittle and Karen Fritch about
presenting at the April Faculty Champion Meeting on Friday, April 24, 1:003:00 p.m. She will follow-up with them.

Scenario example deliverable in March. (SLS’s are not acceptable for
college-wide assessment.) Per Mike Earle’s suggestion, Kim Molinaro has
devised an activity to break down the ARC scoring rubric to try to explain the
performance elements of critical thinking.
Carol is meeting with Jesse Coraggio to help coordinate collecting
assessments college-wide.
How to best leverage the CT subcommittee of the Educational Oversight
Group: Janice will get with Jesse for clarification and suggestions on how to
proceed. Carol will assist Janice with pulling together the CT subcommittee
for the spring.
Faculty Champions will be encouraged to administer the CAT this spring
semester. Those who administer should participate in the scoring workshop
on June 26. Carol will check with Jesse about the number of CAT
instruments left over (cost $5 each).
Request from Mark Lulek: Having difficulty with certain components of the
ARC Scoring Template, particularly the Synthesis and Reflection aspects. He
would like to set a meeting for early March with those who are developing
similar instruments in other areas so that he can work out the problems. Carol
and Janice will meet with Mark on Friday, March 6, 10:00 a.m. at the
EpiCenter in Conference Room 1-109.
