Attended (via SPOC): Janice Thiel, Gail Lancaster, Carol Weideman, Karen Hesting
Topics:
I)
General
A) Meetings via SPOC – first Wednesdays, 1:00 p.m.
B) Janice provided a QEP Update for Academic Leadership at the Clearwater
Campus on 3/20.
C) Janice drafted an update for Anne Cooper on 4/14:
1) Faculty Champions and members of their Academic Round Tables
(ARTs) attended a retreat on January 30 to focus on the critical
thinking initiative. They received instructions and resources to support
their work.
2) 2008 Faculty Champions (College of Education, Early Childhood, Ethics,
Student Life Skills) are finalizing their ART’s Instructional Portfolios.
(due May 8)
3) 2009 Faculty Champions (Business Technologies, Communication,
Library, Nursing, Paralegal) have been submitting deliverables to the
online Faculty Champion Guide via ANGEL which include the
Instructional Portfolio components 1) Teaching Learning Connection,
and 2) Literature Review; and also, ART Member List, Spring &
Summer ART Meeting Dates, ART Action Items, and ARC Scenario.
(due May 8)
4) Faculty Champion for Business Technologies is attending the online
course “Introduction to Critical Thinking for Instruction and Learning,”
and will assist with the creation of learning modules that will be
installed in the online Faculty Champion Guide.
5) A Quality Enhancement Committee meeting was held on February 27 to
update members and garner feedback. Most indicated feeling
comfortable with the progress being made in most areas of the three
initiatives: Student Success, Professional Development, and Critical
Thinking Resources.
6) SPC Reads “Into the Wild” critical thinking activities are being held
college-wide. A system for collecting data on these (and future) events
has been implemented.
7) Faculty Champion for Assessment attended the Critical Thinking
Assessment Test (CAT) workshop, and will assist with the creation of
learning modules that will be installed in the online Faculty Champion
Guide. The CAT will be administered in June and scored in July.
8) Spring Critical Thinking Institute held on March 26 and 27 in conjunction
with the annual “Narrowing the Gulf” conference attended by
approximately 100 SPC faculty and staff.
9) Faculty Champions and select members of their ARTs will attend a
workshop on April 24 aimed at formalizing the collection of critical
thinking activities and Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs). The WITS
Department has agreed to assist with the creation of a specialized

online repository with search capabilities for critical thinking activities
and RLOs that will enhance the Gateway Website’s resources.
10) A Critical Thinking Subcommittee of the Educational Oversight Group
has been formed to review institutional data from critical thinking
assessments and identify goals and objectives to improve student
learning, and will meet on April 17.
11) The conversation has begun for next year’s ARTs: Natural Science,
Dental Hygiene, O&P, Vet Tech, Emergency Medical Services,
Funeral Services, Health Information Management, Hospitality &
Tourism Management, Human Services, Medical Laboratory
Technology, Parks & Leisure Services, Physical Therapist Assistant,
Radiography, Respiratory Care, and Veterinary Technology.
D) Janice attended SACS Substantive Change Workshop in Miami on 4/16.
E) Janice will be on vacation June 19-29.
F)
Janice will attend the SACS-COC Summer Institute in Houston on July 1922.
Student Success
A) Classroom Activities
1) The WITS Department is programming a Critical Thinking Activity/RLO
online submission form that will enable repository searching.
2) An interim submission process using a WITS survey form was reviewed
during the Faculty Champion Meeting 4/24. Seven activities have been
collected using this method. This is a summer deliverable for Faculty
Champions.
3) Gail is considering this process, and has begun to solicit activities from
QEC members.
B) Rubrics
1) Most updated version of the Assessment Rubric for Critical Thinking
(ARC) is linked via the Gateway Website and the Faculty Champion
Guide via ANGEL.
2) Business Technologies and Nursing have devised/submitted acceptable
ARC scenarios. Communications, Library, and Paralegal are working
on theirs.
C) ePortfolio
1) ePortfolio for ANGEL 7.3 is not yet implemented. (Blackboard is taking
over ANGEL).
2) How to best tap into programs using LiveText and other ePortfolio options
(College of Education, Paralegal, Public Safety, HEC )? Strengths:
collection of artifacts, grading rubrics, for example scenario-based
ARC implemented through LiveText. Janice will get in touch with
Leigh Hopf since these exist, typically, in the four-year programs.
D) Student Activities
1) Three events at SP/Gibbs, one event at Seminole, and one event at Tarpon
Springs have been entered into “Critical Thinking Programs” database.
These involved 78 students altogether. Janice will remind coordinators

periodically to submit, and will ask about event advertisements, and
any end-of-event surveys/feedback.
2) Silverberg Grant submitted by Lynn Grinnell and Sarah Strom Kays was
not awarded.
Professional Development
A) Critical Thinking Institutes
1) Spring Critical Thinking Institute (Narrowing the Gulf) held 3/26-27.
Evaluation results relayed 4/20 were positive. Peg will contact Janice to
help plan next year’s. Janice needs suggestions for presenter(s).
2) Since the Spring Critical Thinking Institute was held just last March, we
will not hold a Critical Thinking Institute this summer.
3) Fall Critical Thinking Institute
(a) Proposed date of October 30 is too close to the Professional
Development Day planned for October 23.
(b) Janice will investigate October 9 at the SP/Gibbs Campus as a
possibility.
B) Faculty Champions
1) Janice met with all 2008 and 2009 Faculty Champions (except Mika
Nelson) regarding deliverables for Spring which are due May 8, 2009.
Spring deliverables were reviewed at Faculty Champion Meeting on
4/24. Janice has requested and has begun to receive signed PAARS
from Faculty Champions.
2) Faculty Champion Meeting on Friday, May 29, 1:00-3:00 p.m. will focus
on the Intervention piece of the Instructional Portfolio, and Library
resources for critical thinking (Donna Kelly and Chad Mairn).
3) Faculty Champion Guide
(a) Purchase of Graphic Organizers “software” approved, including
college-wide license. Janice met with Nancy Watkins on 4/30;
Nancy is planning to video a model lesson to craft into an
instructional video.
(b) College of Education planning a video to highlight their SLIP
project and how this interfaces with QEP/critical thinking.
(c) Janice worked with Gail on 4/30 to begin creating an RLO about
the interactive model of critical thinking. Gail submitted the
model as an Activity/RLO and is working to complete the RLO
with Camtasia.
(d) Jesse Coraggio will use Camtasia to create an RLO about the ARC
and assessment.
(e) Janice will follow-up to build modules with Holly Hoopes and
Carol. Ideas:
(i) Video faculty before and after CAT Scoring Workshop to
help illustrate what faculty gain from the experience.
(ii) Collect journal articles that describe an intervention and
associated assessment (concrete examples).
(iii) Clarify Assessment vs. Intervention

Gateway Website
1) Janice will add Critical Thinking Activities/RLOs that are being
submitted.
2) Janice will update Critical Thinking Resources with input from Donna
Kelly and Chad Mairn.
B) RLO’s
1) Janice and Karen met on 4/1 and 4/13 to devise an interim Critical
Thinking Activity/RLO submission process.
2) The WITS Department is programming a Critical Thinking Activity/RLO
online submission form that will enable repository searching.
3) Karen and Nancy Doolittle facilitated a hands-on session at the Faculty
Champion Meeting on 4/24 where Nancy and Meg Delgato modeled
the process for devising and submitting a Critical Thinking
Activity/RLO. Four Activities/RLOs were collected that day.
C) Instructional Portfolios
1) Learning curve for Faculty Champions, technically and conceptually.
2) An evaluation instrument needs to be developed.
D) Critical Thinking Resource Centers
1) Donna Kelly and Chad Mairn will provide an overview of Library
resources for critical thinking at the Faculty Champion Meeting on
Friday, May 29, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Assessment
A) Direction
1) Input from the QEC Student Success Subcommittee and the Critical
Thinking Subcommittee of the Educational Oversight Group will help
formulate a plan for utilizing ePortfolio, ARC, and other assessments.
2) Jesse Coraggio, Carol, and Janice met with Dr. Cooper on 4/8. Janice met
with Earl Fratus on 4/13. Both meetings garnered direction and support
for devising college-wide assessment before meeting with the Critical
Thinking Subcommittee.
3) The Critical Thinking Subcommittee met on 4/17 to hear QEP Update,
Assessment Overview, and Discussion Topics including CAT, ARC,
and SSI. Sixteen members – Deans, Program Directors, and Faculty –
attended.
4) Educational Oversight Group met on 5/1 to make recommendations to
SPC cabinet regarding Educational Outcomes.
(a) SPC Old – Think logically, critically and creatively to solve
problems and make decisions
(b) State – Critical Thinking: Reflect on, analyze, synthesize, and
apply information
(c) Janice – Engage in an active and systematic process of
communicating, analyzing, synthesizing, problem solving,
