Three recommendations will be forwarded to the Educational Oversight Group: 1) Concerning discipline-specific assessments for critical thinking, it is recommended that SPC work toward encouraging faculty to make known what critical thinking assessments and activities they are utilizing. 2) After considering the various critical thinking assessments and comparing institutional benefit, it is recommended that ePortfolio resources be reallocated to administration of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). 3) It is recommended to promote the Gateway Website (http://www.SPCollege.edu/CriticalThinking) via the main SPC Webpage, department Webpages, and other publications (i.e., Blue & White). Gail will send Janice her exemplary, average, and poor examples. 2) ARC Scoring Workshop (a) Friday, November 20 (b) 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. (c) EpiCenter 1-324 (d) Faculty Champions have been asked to invite a few of their discipline’s faculty to participate. Approximately 5 scenario responses per hour per person can be scored, meaning 15 can be scored per person during the 4-hour ARC Scoring Workshop. Janice will poll Faculty Champions again to find out a more accurate number of participants. (e) Carol will speak to Jesse about sampling. (f) Janice will gather materials for the workshop: (i) Copies of ARC – one per person. (ii) Bubble sheet (Carol will send to Janice) – one per paper (iii) Pencils (iv) Post-its (v) Refreshments – coffee, tea, water, danish, etc. Gail will bring chocolate. C) Critical Thinking Assessment Test (CAT) 1) Carol facilitated a CAT Panel Discussion at the Fall Critical Thinking Institute on 10/9/09. 2) Carol presented the concept of administering the CAT in specific math courses during the math meeting on 10/23/09. Janice will follow-up with Sharon Griggs to discuss administration in core math courses for Gen Ed: MAC 1105, STA 2023, and/or MGF 1106. D) Status of Process Measures and Assessments are now available via the Gateway Website. Student Success A) Classroom Activities 1) New form from WITS – The project scope grew and WITS needed to bump it for something else. Mike is trying to do the PHP himself and so it is not a quick project like he is accustomed to. 2) Gail asked faculty to input discipline-specific activities into the existing form, and five have been submitted, which are now included in the list via the Gateway Website. Gail has more she’ll input. B) Rubrics 1) More rubric examples: Janice will ask Jesse about his rubric presentation. Can Faculty Champions create a rubric to assess the Intervention? Professional Development A) QEC Meeting follow-up 1) Discussion about the creation of a Center for Teaching & Learning. Janice will ask Anne about the possibility of a place for faculty to gather and share. 2) Brainstorm of Professional Development ideas: Janice will review the information gathered before to see what is still current. She will cluster the ideas, and then ask Earl to send out to the members of the Professional Development Committee to look for conferences/speaker and evaluate each one: cost, closely aligned, etc. A follow-up will take place at the December Faculty Champion meeting. Faculty Champions 1) Chad Mairn has not yet indicated whether he is looking for a co-Champion or planning to go solo. 2) Faculty Champion Guide (a) Janice solicited feedback regarding the reorganization on 10/6/09, and is awaiting response. (b) A video to highlight the College of Education's Student Learning Inquiry Project (SLIP) and how this interfaces with QEP/critical thinking was developed and is still being revised. (c) Nancy Watkins is considering doing a studio-version of her graphic organizers lesson. (d) Janice is planning to create learning modules to help clarify assessment and activities that promote critical thinking. Critical Thinking Resources A) Gateway Website 1) Janice teleconferenced with Vicki Westergard on 10/20/09. Vicki had the old SACS Website reconfigured so that hits redirect to the new Critical Thinking Gateway Website. 2) Donna continues to work on consolidating and organizing the listing of library resources: books, journal articles, Web sites, ebooks, and videos. 3) Karen continues to post updates to the WITS-QEC Liaison Weblog. 4) Janice has a meeting with Chad Mairn on November 8 for him to share ideas for making the Gateway Website more collaborative. B) RLO’s 1) There are now 14 critical thinking activities/RLO’s listed via the Gateway Website. C) Instructional Portfolios 1) Gail is working on an evaluation instrument for the Instructional Portfolios. D) Critical Thinking Resource Centers 1) Good books that support critical thinking should be recommended for library purchase. Send Gail the title and author.
