Listening
1. I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 11 years old. Every day
in my room after school, I listen to some of my favorite rock
groups and try to copy their sounds. I don’t know if I’ll ever be
the best in the world, but I’d like to be the best in the country.
2. My dad has a bunch of old jazz records that he and my mom
love to play loud, especially on Sundays. I’s kind of a tradition
to listen to jazz on Sundays in my house. That’s what I grew up
with. Anyway, my mom played classical piano when she was a
little girl, so I use her piano to play some jazz. It’s fun.
3. I love listening to Mariah Carey and Beyonce. I guess they’re
the ones who turned me on to R&B. I love what they can do
with their voice. They’re so smooth. Not like that hip-hop stuff.
When I hear them do something I like, I just listen to it over
and over again and try to copy that R&B style.
4. I play once a month in the city’s orchestra – you know, the
“Saturday Night Symphony” at the City Center? I play the
trombone! Most of my friends like pop, but for me classical
music is the best. I play it all the time when I’m practicing.
Further Listening:
1. A: What do you like listening to?
B: Lots of people like to listen to everything, right? Pop music,
reggae, hip-hop, you know. But not me, I listen to only one
thing: Latin American music.
A: Really? That’s a little unusual, isn’t it?
B: Yeah, maybe. But when I feel lazy, I turn on that music and I
just want to dance, you know? It gives me instant energy.
2. A: I like your music collection, but what’s this Mozart doing in
here?
B: Uh…well…
A: You don’t really listen to this, do you?
B: When I heel a little bit nervous, I like to put on some slow
classical music. It really calms me down. Um… You won’t tell
anyone about this, will you?
3. A: You’ve got a lot of songs in your MP3 player. What kind of
music do you usually listen to?
B: It’s hard to say. Different music for different moods.
A: For example?
B: Well, when I feel sad or I’m a little blue, I like listening to
Barndoor Boys. A lot of people don’t like country music, but I
like it. It cheers me up.
4. A: I can’t find anything good on the radio! We gotta get some
party music in here!
B: Don’t worry about it. Anything is OK with me.
A: I think you only listened to hip-hop and dance music.
B: No, no! When I feel emotional, I like to put on soft music,
especially romantic ballads. It really relaxes me.
Extended Listening

here is singer Lori Kool.
LK: Thanks, Wayne, you know I’m such a fan of your show.!

C1: Your music rules!
DJ: What’s your question for Lori?
C1: Yeah, I want to know, when you’re listening to music, Lori,
where do you listen?
LK: Wow. Where? Um, I listen a lot at home, in my living room.
I’ve got a nice new stereo system.
C1: Oh, me too. Can’t live without it. Lori. I’ve got tons of CDs,
too. How do you get your music?
LK: CDs. It takes up an entire wall of my living room.
DJ: next caller for Lori Kool.
C2: Lori, hey, what’s up? What do you have in your collection?
What do you like listening to?
LK: Everything, from country to classical, from hip-hop to
electronica. When I feel really happy, I love to listen and sing
along with some of the old jazz songs.
C2: Yeah? So do I.
LK: Where do you like to listen and sing?
C2: In my car. If the windows are up, I’m sings away.
DJ: And how do you get your music?
C2: I used to listen to the radio, but now I borrow lots of CDs
from my friends. I don’t have so much money.
DJ: Me neither.
LK: We know what you mean.
C2: I’m still a student. When I get more money, I want to have a
big collection like Lori.
DJ: OK, all right, tome for one more question before our
commercial break.
C3: Hi…um, am I on the air?
LK: Hey, this is Lori. How are you?

great.
LK: You’re so nice! Thanks.
DJ: You want to ask Lori something?
C3: Uh, well…um…I forgot.
Lk: Well, here’s a question for you. Where do you listen to my
music?
C3: Oh, everywhere. On my MP3 player with my headphones, I
can listen on the train, while I’m riding my bike. Even in class
when the lecture’s boring.
DJ: And how do you get your music/
C3: Almost everything on-line. I buy on-line and download
songs.
DJ: Me too1 I don’t have room at home for a bunch of CDs.
C3: Neither do I.
DJ: Right1 So we all agree that Lori Kool’s music is the best!
LK: You’re too kind.
DJ: And we’ll spotlight her new super-mix Fast Feet right after
these commercials on WDMZ MusicRadio with Weird Wayne.
