I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 11 years old. Every day in my room after school, I listen to some of my favorite rock groups and try to copy their sounds. I don’t know if I’ll ever be the best in the world, but I’d like to be the best in the country. 2. My dad has a bunch of old jazz records that he and my mom love to play loud, especially on Sundays. I’s kind of a tradition to listen to jazz on Sundays in my house. That’s what I grew up with. Anyway, my mom played classical piano when she was a little girl, so I use her piano to play some jazz. It’s fun. 3. I love listening to Mariah Carey and Beyonce. I guess they’re the ones who turned me on to R&B. I love what they can do with their voice. They’re so smooth. Not like that hip-hop stuff. When I hear them do something I like, I just listen to it over and over again and try to copy that R&B style. 4. I play once a month in the city’s orchestra – you know, the “Saturday Night Symphony” at the City Center? I play the trombone! Most of my friends like pop, but for me classical music is the best. I play it all the time when I’m practicing. Further Listening: 1. A: What do you like listening to? B: Lots of people like to listen to everything, right? Pop music, reggae, hip-hop, you know. But not me, I listen to only one thing: Latin American music. A: Really? That’s a little unusual, isn’t it? B: Yeah, maybe. But when I feel lazy, I turn on that music and I just want to dance, you know? It gives me instant energy. 2. A: I like your music collection, but what’s this Mozart doing in here? B: Uh…well… A: You don’t really listen to this, do you? B: When I heel a little bit nervous, I like to put on some slow classical music. It really calms me down. Um… You won’t tell anyone about this, will you? 3. A: You’ve got a lot of songs in your MP3 player. What kind of music do you usually listen to? B: It’s hard to say. Different music for different moods. A: For example? B: Well, when I feel sad or I’m a little blue, I like listening to Barndoor Boys. A lot of people don’t like country music, but I like it. It cheers me up. 4. A: I can’t find anything good on the radio! We gotta get some party music in here! B: Don’t worry about it. Anything is OK with me. A: I think you only listened to hip-hop and dance music. B: No, no! When I feel emotional, I like to put on soft music, especially romantic ballads. It really relaxes me.
