After I had watched the movie Lost in Translation, I don’t know why Bob didn’t has a
translator with him to do his job. Because he cannot understand what did the
Japanese director say, and the Japanese translator didn’t express well that cause Bob
cannot present what the Japanese director want to appear in that advertisement.
The scene from the movie which is actually a “lost in translation” , I think it is when
the Japanese director said many words but the translator just tell Bob with a few
words. Although Bob felt strange but he still cannot make better in this problem. I
ever had the experience of “lost in translate “. Last week, I was walking on the way to
school. I met a foreigner, he asked everyone he saw where can he take a bus. That
people couldn’t understand what he said, so didn’t pay attention for him. When he
saw me, he came to talk with me and ask the same question. But I just living in
Tainan since September. I actually couldn’t tell him where can he take a bus. I asked
him “ where do you want to arrive? “ he said “ I don’t know “ “do you see that traffic
light? I just want to go there and turn right. “Then, I feel confusing. He couldn’t tell
me where he want to arrive because he cannot understand Chinese. How can I help
him? I think Taiwan should gain more English on any signs. I cannot change it next
time when I confront the same problem. Now I study with many foreigners. Our
culture are different and we cannot be best friend with them. Maybe the reason is
that we cannot talk to each other clearly. I think everyone should respect any cultural
differences. Some countries cannot accept Taiwanese culture. We have many
traditional rules. Taiwanese culture don’t influence me to see people of a certain
country. But I still prefer Taiwanese tradition, because this is my home country. I am
used to respecting my ancestors. I am used to using chopsticks, and so on. Cultural
difference always makes many disputes in the whole world. I think we must try to
receive any different culture. This way can let our country change, be a diversification.
Translation, is the most important tool to connect with world. It can express culture,
opinion, attitude, emotion, value, etc. if lost in translation, it may cause many serious
troubles. Another person can’t understand what are you mean, what do you want to
do. For instance, in this movie, Bob cannot do his job well, the reason is lost in
translation. When we contact with a different language nation, if we cannot translate
clearly and completely, even we have capitals, resources, technology, skill, and labor,
but just cannot communication. We can’t not finish anything anymore. Maybe
Taiwan will be a isolated country.
