Recent stormy weather resulting in the flooding of agricultural land has produced
an expected outcome: soaring prices for vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meat.
Statistics gathered by the ministry of Agriculture show that more than 75,000 hectares
of prime agricultural crop production have been wiped out with a further 100,000
hectares partially damaged.
Poultry, pigs, dairy cattle, and beef cattle have been affected, too, with hundreds of
thousands of poultry and tens of thousands of meat and dairy animal deaths reported.
Consequently, vegetable prices are expected to increase by an average of 25％, fruit
30％, dairy products 20％, and meat products 15％. The government has been urged
to allow more imports of fresh produce and meat from neighboring countries.

Credit Crisis Changing Consumer Price Consciousness
The international credit crisis, which became evident recently, has affected
consumers everywhere. With falling house prices but steady or increasing mortgage
payments, people even in rich countries are finding out that their possessions are
worth much less than they were a year ago. Add skyrocketing food and fuel prices,
and even the rich are beginning to change how they shop.
With gasoline prices at all-time highs, new car buyers are choosing smaller, more
gas-efficient models. They are also driving less. Supermarket shoppers are buying less
expensive brands of foods, and mall shoppers are switching to cheaper stores.
Whether consumers return to old shopping habits when the economy recovers remains
to be seen.
