Standards of Measurement
• Standard- an exact quantity (amount)
people agree to use for comparison.
• Measurements must have a number
and a unit.
• Scientists, and the rest of the world use
the SI system of measurement. (Based
on multiples of 10)
• In the USA we use the English System
of measurement.
What do we Measure?
• Length- the distance between two pts.
• Mass - the amt. of matter in an object.
• Volume- the amt. of space something
occupies.
• Density- the amt. of particles packed into a
space.
• Temperature- the amt. of energy in an
object.
• Time- how long it takes for something to
happen.
Tools we Use for Measuring
• Length- metric ruler
• Mass- triple beam balance
• Volume- graduated cylinder
• Density- triple beam balance and
graduated cylinder,
• Temperature- thermometer
• Time- clock
Standard Units of Measurement
• Length- meter
• Mass- grams
• Volume- ml, cm3
• Density- g/ml, or g/cm3
• Temperature- Celsius, or centigrade
(degrees)
• Time- seconds
