Measurement Standards of Measurement • Standard- an exact quantity (amount) people agree to use for comparison. • Measurements must have a number and a unit. • Scientists, and the rest of the world use the SI system of measurement. (Based on multiples of 10) • In the USA we use the English System of measurement. What do we Measure? • Length- the distance between two pts. • Mass - the amt. of matter in an object. • Volume- the amt. of space something occupies. • Density- the amt. of particles packed into a space. • Temperature- the amt. of energy in an object. • Time- how long it takes for something to happen. Tools we Use for Measuring • Length- metric ruler • Mass- triple beam balance • Volume- graduated cylinder • Density- triple beam balance and graduated cylinder, • Temperature- thermometer • Time- clock Standard Units of Measurement • Length- meter • Mass- grams • Volume- ml, cm3 • Density- g/ml, or g/cm3 • Temperature- Celsius, or centigrade (degrees) • Time- seconds
