Getting Started on HealthStream—it’s Easy!
What is HealthStream?
HealthStream is an online learning management system. This means that all of your
education at HCGH can be tracked through an Internet-based system. It can be
accessed anywhere the Internet can be accessed. Each staff person has an account on
HealthStream and a unique password.
IMPORTANT: your Meditech initials are your user ID. You cannot access HealthStream
until your Meditech initials are assigned to you.
What’s in it for me? (Lots!)
 You can view your transcript from anywhere; it updates automatically for most
of your education activities.
 You can see all of the courses/classes that have been assigned to you so you
know what you have to do.
 Self-registration for class times: For some courses, you can pick the class date
you want and enroll yourself! Control over your schedule!
 Some of the courses/classes let you take the test online and get instant credit.
For example, this is a great way to do annual fire and safety classes. If you take
the pre-test and pass, you don’t have to go through the class (unless you want
to)! Should save you some time!
 Course content remains on your transcript so you can review the content as
many times as you like.
Where do I get help if I need it?



Use this guide to get started; there are “Show me how” buttons to
demonstrate the system.
HealthStream is very intuitive—if you use email, shop or bank on the Internet,
you should find HealthStream very user-friendly.

Getting Started on HealthStream
Step One: Logging on to HealthStream
A) The website address is: www.healthstream.com/hlc/hcgh
If you are in the hospital, you can access HealthStream by opening the Internet (which
opens the hospital Intranet). Click “Clinical Links” to find the HealthStream link.
B) Next step--IMPORTANT:
a. Turn Off Pop-up blocker—HealthStream will not work if your computer is set to
block pop-up windows.
1) Go to “Tools”
2) Put cursor over “Pop-Up Blocker” and click on “Turn Off Pop-up
blocker”
NOTE: ALL pop-up blockers must be disabled
(i.e. Google toolbar, etc.)

Step Two: Changing Your Password
1) Click on “My Profile”.
2) Click on “Manage Account Information”.
3) Follow the prompts to change your password to something easy that you will remember. It
does not need to have numbers or be complicated. It will never need to be updated, so avoid
making it the same password as your Meditech, as your Meditech password must be changed
frequently.
NOTE: Enter a password reminder—it is not mandatory, but if you forget your password,
all you need to do is enter your Meditech initials and click on “Password Reminder” and
your reminder will be displayed for you.
Step Three: Starting a Course
Note: Every course will have a deadline/due date. Anything in RED is overdue.

Click on the first blue-link of the course to get started. It may be a pre-test or it may be an online
course.
If you need more assistance in how to navigate the HealthStream website, you have several
options.
1) Click away and explore…you can’t break anything here.
2) Ask one of your super-users on the unit. Super-users include the nurse educators, the
CPM or your manager.
3) Click the “Show me how” button and watch the short video.
Step Four: Reviewing a Course
Use the buttons at the bottom of the
screen to navigate the program.
You can turn off the speaker and read
the program without sound, if you prefer
(click “mute”)
If you have to exit the program, it will
hold your spot. When you return to the
course, it will ask you if you want to
return to the last page visited. You
decide.
You can review the program as often as you like. When you are finished, you must take the
test to get credit and complete the course.

Reviewing Your Transcript
After you have passed the exam, the course moves off of your Course list and onto your
transcript (this will replace our paper “Education Log”). You can review the course material
again anytime you like.
