Term 1 Week 4 Commas Monday, November 2nd Sometimes a word or phrase will interrupt what the sentence is saying and needs to be set off with commas. These are interrupters. Examples of these include the following: in fact, for example, by the way, after all, to be exact, on the other hand, however. Example 1- Yesterday, on the other hand, was a more productive day. Example 2- He was, I believe, an amateur swimmer. Add commas where they are needed. 1. You are after all the only one to understand French out of everyone that I know. 2. They are in fact the only beekeepers in town since the other ones moved away. 3. I had planned however to go home first before going to the game. 4. It was in fact written on May 27 near Biloxi. 5. We after all are the winners of the competition no matter what anyone else says. Example 1- Biloxi, Mississippi, is found on the Gulf of Mexico. Example 2- On December 10, 1817, Mississippi was admitted as the 20th state of the union. Add commas where they are needed. 1. Their trip to Seattle Washington will take three days because they will be driving over a thousand miles. 2. The race will be held in Charlotte North Carolina on October 1 2015. 3. Our conference on June 2 2003 was very effective because we talked about the issues that many teenagers face on a daily basis. 4. Atlanta Georgia was the setting of the Olympics several years ago. 5. Kosciusko Mississippi is the birthplace of Oprah Winfrey. Compose a sentence that includes a date or a city and state. They need to be separated with a comma. Ex. cool, windy night Ex. some colorful, decorated eggs *Tip- Try putting and between the adjectives or changing their order. Add the commas where they are needed. If commas are not needed, leave the sentence alone. 1. spicy hot food 2. several distinct cultural groups 3. Hot humid climate 4. Bleak arid landscape 5. Hot pink shirt 6.
