COMMAS PRACTICE 1
Using commas with Items in a Series and with Compound Sentences. Place a comma in the
appropriate location in each sentence. Watch for sentences in which the inclusion or
omission of a comma affects the meaning. If a sentence does not require any commas, Write
C after the sentence.
1. The photograph showed a happy mischievous little boy.
2. Barbara will bring a potato salad to the picnic and Marc will bring the cold cuts.
3. The professional soldier had served his country in wars in Germany Korea and Vietnam.
4. We studied the following authors in English class this semester: Richard Wright
Lorraine Hansberry and Margaret Walker.
5. For her weekend trip she packed shorts a top and shoes for running; a swimsuit and beach
robe; coordinated slacks skirt and blouse ; and one pair of shoes that would match the
street clothes.
6. The committee suggested that the cafeteria serve a different selection each day that
classes not be interrupted by announcements and that pep rallies always be held during
fifth period.
7. Students will receive paper pencils rulers etc. at the beginning of the test.
8. April liked the ballet but Jenny thought it was boring.
9. Last winter was abnormally cold icy and snowy.
10. To participate in any athletic program, you must possess skill ambition persistence and
the ability to sacrifice.
