Monday, August 17th
Noun phrases
When several words are used together like that, they are called a noun phrase. The noun phrase is the complete subject.
Example 1 (The noun phrase is underlined.)
Fourteen good pilots died in the war.
Example 2 (The noun phrase is underlined.)
The chrome-plated motorcycles glistened in the sun.
Verb phrases
Just like several words can form the subject of a sentence, the verb can consist of two or more words. This is called a verb
phrase.
Example 1 (The verb phrase is underlined.)
My best friend could not work tonight.
Example 2 (The verb phrase is underlined.)
The light green grapes have been eaten.
Circle the noun phrases. Underline the verb phrases.

Adjective phrase
An adjective phrase (or adjectival phrase) is a phrase that tells us something about the noun it is modifying.
Example 1 (The adjective phrase is underlined.)
The extremely tired lioness is losing patience with her overly enthusiastic cub.
Example 2 (The adjective phrase is underlined.)
The beautifully carved frames are worth more than the paintings.
Adverb phrase
Adverbial phrase (or adverb phrase) is the term for two or more words which play the role of an adverb.
Example 1 (The adverb phrase is underlined.)
She responded in a very rude manner.
Example 2 (The adverb phrase is underlined.)
Bella always arrives before the other workers.
On the line before each sentence, write ADJ if the underlined prepositional phrase is an adjective phrase or ADVB
if it is an adverb phrase.
