Verb Tense Review

A. Simple Present Tense

Used: habits, facts, repeated actions, nonaction verbs

Usual words: every …, usually , sometimes , never , etc.

Remember: + s with he/she/it

Helping Verb: Question/Negative: do/does

Nonaction verbs (stative or nonprogressive verbs) are like facts— only simple

present

action with a shorter action that interrupts it.

Usual words: while , as , at (3:00) yesterday

Remember: past be verb + verb –ing

Helping Verb: Statement/Question/Negative: be verb

Used: to indicate that an action began in the past but is still true in the present to show a completed action sometime in the past (we don’t know exactly when; could be anytime before now ) ( ever ) to describe a repeated action that may happen again ( so far)

Usual words: already , yet , never , ever (question), (three ) times so far , since , for

Remember: have/has + pp (careful for irregular verbs)

Remember: have/has + been+ verb-ing

Helping Verb: Statement/Question/Negative: have/has

G. Simple Future

Used: to describe a future action

Usual words: tomorrow, in (three days), next (year)

Remember: will + base form of verb (especially for an offer) be + going to + base form of verb (especially for a plan)

Special notes: with future time clauses (before, after, when, as soon as, if, etc.) use present tense with some fact words (plan, intend, want, hope) use present tense contraction: will + not = won’t

Helping Verb: Statement/Question/Negative: will OR be (going to)

(Do you have plans?)

H . Past Perfect

Used: to sequence past actions (put them in time order). The action in the past perfect is further past than the more recent action in the simple past.

Remember: had + pp (careful for irregular verbs)
