“Innovative Business Models in Global Healthcare”

Description

This course will examine innovation in the life sciences and health services industries and the new business models emerging in the U.S. and in global markets where healthcare infrastructure is still evolving.

Objectives

Analyze trends in life sciences and health services innovation

Study innovative business models in select country markets

Identify future opportunities for investment and career growth

Course Content

The course will cover specific subsectors in life sciences:

Pharmaceuticals

Biotechnology

 Medical devices

Diagnostics

And in health services:

 Healthcare technology

 Ambulatory and acute healthcare

 Healthcare financing

Integrated clinical and financial models

Cases will be drawn from a range of countries including the U.S., India, China, Haiti and the Middle East. The course will focus on ensuring students understand critical components of innovative healthcare business models including the:

Key drivers of change in life sciences and health services

Strategic challenges and opportunities to improve healthcare

Role of technology in innovation

Investment models and key actors

Role of various stakeholders, including consumers / patients

Cost, pricing and reimbursement

Role of government regulation

Legal and intellectual property

The class will utilize a consistent business model framework across sectors:

Opportunity Targeting

What customer / consumer market opportunities are being targeted?

Revenue / Profit Models

What revenue and profit models are being used to capture and grow value?

Value Proposition

What is the entity’s competitively differentiated value proposition for its customers / consumers?

How is the entity protecting its customer / consumer base and profits?

What are the scope of activities, assets and partners?

Strategic Control Scope

This framework will allow students to deepen their understanding of what drives and sustains innovation as countries explore creative ways to solve their healthcare problems around access, quality, cost and experience and how these imperatives are balanced with investment returns and risks.

Class Format and Instructors:

Class format will be lectures, readings, and case studies with senior executive guest speakers in every class possible. This course will be co-taught by former biopharmaceutical executive, Lorraine Marchand ‘06 and Mike Lovdal, former partner

Oliver Wyman with a focus on healthcare consulting.
