COURSE OUTLINE
CWE 101 is designed to be an active/experiential learning community using group discussions
and shared information. Students will learn to effectively research career options using a variety
of job search strategies, write targeted resumes and cover letters, practice successful
interviewing techniques and develop a comprehensive portfolio. Finally, students will learn how
to effectively utilize the tools developed in this course as they progress to the next phase of their
career development.
Upon successfully completing this course, students will:

Identify or deepen understanding of their chosen industry/occupation



Articulate personal strengths and transferrable skills relevant to chosen career
Develop effective cover letters and resumes, portfolios and practice interviewing skills.
Increase understanding of how to leverage the tools developed in this course when
applying for internships, employment opportunities or when transferring to other
educational institutions
 Regular attendance and active participation both in class and in online discussion board
throughout the quarter.
 Successful and timely completion of course readings and assignments.
 No text book is required for this course
Preparation for internship, employment or educational transfer
 Research and refine specific career objectives relevant to program of study
 Identify potential opportunities
 Develop targeted cover letters, resumes & portfolios
 Participate in mock interviews
 Conduct informational interview with professional in field of interest
Develop a job search strategy for chosen industry
 Research & target specific organization, program of study or institution of higher learning
 Understand the hidden market, identify & utilize resources
 Begin developing personal and professional networks
 Share research methods and strategies with group
Begin search for internship, employment or start transfer process

For each day an assignment is late .10 will be deducted from assignment grade.

The success of the learning community depends on regular attendance, assignment completion
and contribution to both in class and online discussion board conversations. Quality and
quantity of participation will be factored into percentage of final grade.
