ENGL&101 – English Composition I (Online & Hybrid)
Trimble Writing Exercise #2
This writing exercise has three parts. Please use this form to complete both parts and
then submit it to me using the drop box in the Week 2 Module.
Part 1: Choose two words from this week’s assigned reading that you did not know the
meanings of. Look up the words in a dictionary and IN YOUR OWN WORDS explain the
definition for each. After your definition, use each word in a new sentence of your own.

Part 2: On pages 17-19 of Writing With Style, John Trimble suggests that a good way to
begin writing is to come up with questions about your subject. Now that you have read
the assignment sheet for our first essay, use this space to list some possible subjects for
your narrative and some possible questions. Think about specific questions that relate
to your subject, rather than to the writing process in general. The goal here is to help
give yourself subject matter to write about. Come up with at least ONE possible subject
and at least FIVE TO TEN total questions.

Part 3: After reviewing Notes Regarding Vivid Detail and my video explanation entitled
Supporting Assertions With Examples, take a stab at writing two different assertions
(about anything you want!) followed by 1-2 sentences that serve as examples for that
assertion.
