Peer Review Worksheet - Analysis
Reviewer:___________________________________________________
FOR THE WRITER: Explain what you are trying to DO in the essay and WHY. Identify which mode of
analysis essay you are primarily pursuing: rhetorical analysis, critique, or analytical tool (understanding
of course that these are not mutually exclusive categories).
FOR THE REVIEWER: Tell the writer what you see as the central claims, point out areas that lack clarity,
and ask questions to help them refine their thinking. Pay special attention to flaws in their argument and
transitions between ideas. At this point, ignore potential grammar, punctuation and spelling issues and
focus on content.
What is the thesis? Is it clear, non-obvious, and arguable? Explain why it is or is not working. Offer
potential additions if it needs to be more arguable or specific.
What are the main points that the writer addresses in the essay? Are there logical connections between
them? Or is it closer to a static, 5-paragraph model of essay? Suggest possible connections that could be
built between ideas.
Missed Opportunities: What other ideas might the writer incorporate into their essay? Where have they
missed a rebuttal or alternate interpretation that should be addressed? Are there additional questions
that the essay brings up that need to be addressed, or implications that should be discussed? Ask at least
three specific questions of the writer, and focus on questions that can push the writer’s thinking further.
