Approval of the Minutes - approved Guest Speakers – a. Professor Tracy Slagter - USP Collaborative and would like a whole lot of student input. General Ed program all over the country disappointed with OSA Assembly at yesterday’s meeting. The program began in 2013. USP talked to this body about scheduling issues last year, bottle necks that happen due to paired classes, pairing quest 2 in a different way after feedback from last year. Students have options and a little more flexible and time will tell if this is working. Quest III just last year the newest addition in some ways most difficult to take and teach; instructors are used to control in the classroom and work with the community now the classroom exists not only here but to push the boundaries have to be willing to go with the flow evidence. Do they complain about Quest III, yes they do. The style of teaching makes all nervous and uncomfortable, never underestimate what a sophomore can do. Extended to study abroad in January Costa Rico, offering to Quest III in the interim does not always work as not enough students around in the summer, talking with advising they do not feel that is the right thing to do. Registration, what is the bottle neck that students are running into? USP is nationally recognized and don’t want to give up on it. Would like to stop surveying students so much no use to her if 57 responded. Professor Slagter has spoken with Jordan on creating a permanent student advisory panel to USP. At this point Professor Slagter will ask students that work with her or are in her class questions regarding USP if they have gone through the classes. The students do give a lot of useful information and still have that in Guest I, Guest 11, Guest III, and connect, sooner rather than later, the advisory body would be great for brainstorming. Scheeler: first apologize on behalf of OSA Assembly. Lodel: three signature questions in USP, correct? Answer: most quest courses were brand new and courses were revamped them some what you have rightfully critiqued this and the student advisory board would help this. Schettle, mentioned some data that you had student opinions? What is a liberal arts education in quest I all crazy answers as they did not know, 91% of those that completed the survey like the classroom environment and the paired classes the students really do like having classes together, 25 students in university number one or two like to be cared for and like to know that have a relationship to instructor, encounter hyper bonding over all experience 62% say that they peer mentor was a good experience, Guest II by in large already existed, except for the pairings that was a student voice concerned , Guest III the first time in 2013 students did not expect community learning we have dropped the ball communicating to students, communication has gone much better. Brining U-Plan bringing back as a conference b. Concealed Carry – suspend rules to invite guest Mr. Jordan Hanson to the table. Jordan Hanson, President for Concealed Carry Club on campus. Novak: I talked with my friends about this and they would feel uncomfortable if guns allowed in campus buildings. Jordan: 189 students would actually be able to have guns as have to be 21 to have a permit. Elliott: scary to know those students could carry a gun with or without a permit that would mean that people will not follow the law and rules of the permit then too. Boothe: As CA would not feel comfortable entering a room with drunken students in it that are 21 and have access to guns. Would have to quit being a CA. Answer: In the dorms gun lockers would have to be added and a list to UP on those that have guns. Johnson: college more violent if guns allow there will be more violence at UW Oshkosh if guns are allowed. Lodel: sits on the fence on this issue guns kept out of hands situation training second amendment allows us to have firearms. VPPT concealed carry training a hunter age 14, it is an area of concern for me to allow guns in classes. Parson remind the body that in his opinion this is going to happen but not tomorrow, start working with legislators there is a legislation process. Schettle: UW system, colleges, chancellors sent letter that would ban weapons in classrooms, feel it is too early to take a stance and do not see a way that campuses are not going to have concealed carry in the next five years. Goodwill: fight for an alarm in each building to enforce that rule and alarm go off if person has a weapon to the UP. Lodel: Hope the University Police would work with students and train those that are going to carry a concealed weapon. Motion to end discussion by McCarville, 2nd by Johnson, vote, passed placard vote (10/20/15) c. OSA Display/Suggestion/Concerns box - skipped d. UW Oshkosh Men’s Soccer Team – Help save the UW Oshkosh Men’s Soccer Team, first soccer team told that due to budget soccer was cut, being proactive and did fund raise $60,000. Darryl Sims says “No we are done here”. Schettle: cannot pay a state employee, coach with fund raising money. Having a conference is like competing on a national level; every game is like a playoff game to us mentally and physically no time to relax every game is important to us. Schettle: An option was given that soccer may come back as a Sport Club and use the fundraising money without restrictions and used to pay the coach if placed the funds in a bank. Nick from soccer: feels OSA as the student government should have all students’ interest in mind and would like to know if there are any options left, stand up to these individuals. Soccer: We are here to find out what other options we have, we raised enough money to keep the program running for two years, just asking for a grace period for two to four years and bring more soccer teams to the WIACC. Sprung: criticize and commend you and commend you, our president has informed us support our soccer team love going to games, the team is not out of options there are always options. Lodel: Why is it so hard to find a conference? Casey said it is not cannot happen overnight but this is the athletic director’s job. Mr. Sims stated he contacted multiple schools but we also contacted the schools and they had not heard from him.
