2016-2017 Young Women in Science & Engineering Investigators (YWISEI) Program Engineering and Computer Science School VOLUNTEER COLLEGE MENTOR APPLICATION FORM Deadline: June 24, 2016 Return to: Magaly Spector E-mail: magaly.spector@utdallas.edu Program Overview The Young WISE Investigators Program main goal is to inspire and encourage high school students from Dallas to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Sponsored by the UT Dallas Erik Johnson School of Engineering and Computer Science, Texas Instruments Foundation, Flour Family Foundation, Ericsson, National Science Foundation, and multiple donors, the Program provides mentoring and support for at least 51 high school students, in at least 17 teams of three, over a one-year period to complete a science, technology, or engineering project. The program also seeks to reward the top 3 teams by awarding scholarships to attend UT Dallas. The success of the program and the students’ completion of their projects depend on an advisory team of mentors comprised of UT Dallas students, industry professionals, and high school science teachers. Each mentor will guide one team of 3 participants through the project development cycle, beginning May 2016 through April 2017. Benefits Receive a $500-stipend ($250 at the end of the fall and spring semesters) for participating Receive training in creating a poster and presentation skills Network with industry professionals and develop personal and professional skills Gain the satisfaction of helping high schoolgirls reach their aspirations Strengthen coaching and leadership skills by working with individuals from different backgrounds Create a legacy by fostering knowledge in the girls that can inspire new ideas for generations to come Minimum Qualifications The applicant must: Be a student majoring in a engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Material Science Be classified as a junior, senior or graduate student Be at least 18 years old Maintain above a 3.0 grade-point-average Have personal transportation or ability to navigate the DART transportation system Have a sincere desire to help adolescent students their achieve project goals Have strong listening skills and practical problem-solving skills, including ability to suggest options and alternatives Mentor Roles and Responsibilities Develop at least 2 research projects proposals (abstracts) for the Program to be used for the girls to choose from. Communicate with the team on a weekly basis (via e-mail, Skype, phone, etc.) and meet them in person once a month. Work with one team of students in choosing and developing the project by providing guidance and offering, support, alternatives and feedback. Help the team set goals in order to carry out/complete above mentioned project and monitor progress towards these goals. Act as a resource person to the team by sharing knowledge, skills, and experiences facilitating the team’s reflection on experiences throughout the project. Work with the team, teacher & UT Dallas Program Coordinator to correct problems that might occur and to maximize the learning experience for the team. Enhance team’s awareness of and belief in their own potential Provide each student, from the team, information about college and professional experiences (i.e. alma mater, college preparation resources, employer, type of work, etc.) Terms of Participation The mentor may be released from the program if the mentor is participating in any prohibited activities, does not comply with DISD safety guidelines, violates Federal, State or Local laws or consistently does not meet with the team. The mentor must commit from June 2016 through April 2017 Required Training Mentor must complete online child protection training (required by Dallas ISD and UT Dallas) Mentor must apply to be a volunteer for DISD schools Mentor must complete a mentor orientation and training Mentor may need to complete TI training depending in the project field Program Application Checklist The following items must be submitted to be considered for the program. Additional meetings may be conducted by email, telephone or Skype with parent consent once a week. The mentors meet after school hours and/or weekends in a designated location at the High Schools participating in the program.
