Beaches and Dunes
(Answer Sheet)
Beaches
Beaches are strips of land at the edge of the sea. They are made up
of sand, pebbles and boulders. Waves wear away cliffs, arches and
large pieces of rock. The waves break then in to small pieces.
Beaches can also have manmade materials in them such as bricks
and glass.
Sand Dunes
Wind moves the sand on beaches. It gets stuck behind stones, pieces
of wood and rubbish. Eventually the sand piles up in to hills called
sand dunes.
Longshore Drift
This is when pebbles and sand move along the beach in a zigzag
pattern. They are moved by the sea. They can be moved a long
way; up to 300kms. Longshore drift can cause problems. Beaches
can be washed away. Some beaches have to have diggers bring in
new sand. Groynes are used to stop the sea moving the sand.
Spits and Bars
Sand and pebbles moved by the sea can be dropped. If they are
dropped in the same place over a long time they can pile up and
build a ridge across the water. This is called a spit. If the spit gets
bigger and joins to another piece of land it is called a bar. Chesil
Beach in Dorset is Europe’s longest bar.
