L 2C Learning to Collaborate Knowledge Management Tools Development The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) Susanna Albertini & Louis Ferrini, FVA Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 1 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) OBJECTIVES: • Support/stimulate the Consortium’s collaboration towards the final project objective of designing powerful simulation-based learning experiences focused on advanced collaboration dynamics and technologies (ACDT). • Structure the knowledge harvested and created in the different Collaboration Domains in light of the Simulations’ design. • Make available and easily accessible all the L2C Simulation material/output generated in the are of simulation design, implementation and deployment (conceptual backgrounds, scenarios, missions, dynamics, characters behaviours…). • Create an active Knowledge Community (Consortium + broader community of researchers, game designers and instructors) around the research, design, implementation and deployment of L2C ACDT simulations. Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 2 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 3 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) THE KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITY STRUCTURE: Two main areas, tightly integrated: • the Knowledge Base and • the Virtual Learning Community Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 4 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) THE KNOWLEDGE BASE GOALS: • Store, organize, make accessible Collaboration Related Contents • Support collaborative Editing of contents • Allow analysis and transformation of contents into SIMs elements (scenarios, missions, dynamics, characters behaviours…) • Document the simulation Experiences of users as well as material generated for these experiences (debriefing notes) Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 5 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) THE VIRTUAL COMMUNITY GOALS: • The creation of an active community around the creation of collaborationrelated simulation games prototypes • The gradual emergence of a group’s identity • Motivate people to return to the KC and to contribute actively to it • Make the KC a “Meeting and Interaction Place”, rather than just an online archive of resources • A place to launch collaborative initiatives and host team projects Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 6 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) OUR TARGET: • L2C project team members • Academic Researchers (in the "feeding" of ideas and concepts to be integrated into the simulations) • Simulations’ designers/developers • Teachers wanting to deploy collaboration games (Academic user sector) • Trainers wanting to deploy collaboration games (Corporate user sector) • Decision makers in organizations (private, public, educational) Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 7 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) GUIDELINES, PROCESSES AND RECOMMENDATIONS • Criteria for an Effective Collaborative Environment • Specific Features to Enhance Motivation – – – • Technical dimension – – • To enter To stay To contribute actively Technical choices (programming language, middleware or not, servers, DB…) Interface, Usability and Navigation related issues Guidelines for building a knowledge community – – – Design Launch Maintenance Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 8 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) KC ITERATIVE DESIGN PROCESS Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 9 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) THE LOGICAL STRUCTURE OF THE KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITY Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 10 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) KC KEY FEATURES: THE KB DIMENSION • Search Engine • Contribution’s wiki (create mode, view mode and co-edit mode, authorship and permission level, Versions, Undo and Master Copy) • Comments space • Additional tools (text editor, bookmarks, send to a friend feature, alert system, voting tool, number of visits, member’s activity level) • Customized contents’ display (search for keyword, what’s new, relevant contents, last inserted entries , most active entries , last visited, my entries, my favourites) Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 11 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) KC KEY FEATURES: THE VC DIMENSION • • • • • • • • • Profiles (My profile, Member’s profiles, Group profiles) Personal blog, Group blog Roles and permission levels Communication synchronous tools (voice communication, instant messaging, chat) Communication asynchronous tools (forums, e-mail system) Events space Collaboration spaces (initiative labs, wiki) Who’s on Network function (to be implemented) Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 12 The L2C Knowledge Community (WP 2) PROTOTYPE PRESENTATION The address of the L2C Knowledge Community: http://www.l2c.fvaweb.net/ Review Meeting – INSEAD, Fontainebleau – 30 March 2007 13
