The Temple Daily Telegram reports that Coach Larry Hennig announced this week that TC has received a
commitment from catcher Melissa Maler, a standout senior at West High School. This news cames along
with the announcement that All-American pitcher Rachel Reese has left the Leopards to play for NCAA
Division I Louisiana-Lafayette.
Reese dominated the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference as a freshman, going 24-4 with a
0.97 earned-run average and 247 strikeouts as TC went 43-13 overall and won the conference
championship.
Reese was an easy pick for NTJCAC Pitcher of the Year and was an NJCAA third-team All-American.
After practicing with the Leopards throughout the fall semester, however, she decided to transfer. Hennig
said an NCAA ruling on whether Reese is eligible to compete this season is pending.
“It’s tough when you lose an All-American, and we can’t really replace Rachel,” Hennig said. “It was a
very difficult decision for her to make.
“She left her mark on our program and on this conference. We wish her well.”
