Killeen breaks ground on convention center KILLEEN — The Temple Daily Telegram reported that Killeen officials Tuesday celebrated the start of construction on the city’s new $8.4-million convention and conference center with a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony at the site along South W.S. Young Drive, between U.S. 190 and Elms Road. Preliminary excavation work has already begun for the 64,000-square-foot facility, which is to be completed and open for business in March 2002. “This has been a long trip,” said former Killeen City Council member Don Farek. “This is for the citizens of Killeen.”
