AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTC LEADERSHIP EDUCATION 1ST SEMESTER SYLLABUS COURSE NAME: AFJROTC LEADERSHIP EDUCATION CREDIT HOURS: One Half (.5) Physical Education/Elective Credit per Semester INSTRUCTOR’S NAME: MSgt Michael F. Shoemaker, Leadership Education Instructor (LEI) Courses Offered and Description: Leadership I (LE-I) - Citizenship, Character and Air Force Tradition Introduces the student to the mission of Air Force Junior ROTC, its organization and philosophies. Students learn customs and courtesies associated with classroom activities, the United States flag, and the wear of the Air Force Junior ROTC uniform, to include attitude and discipline expectations. Students will also receive instruction in study habits and time management, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual harassment and first aid. Leadership II (LE-II) - Communication, Awareness, and Leadership Introduces students to effective communication skills necessary to assume positions of responsibility in the cadet group. Effective writing, speaking, and listening skills are emphasized. Students also develop an understanding of individual and group behavior, to include exercises in motivation, defense mechanisms, and individual responsibility. This course will present basic leadership concepts and principles, situational leadership activities, and techniques for effective teamwork. Leadership III (LE-III) – Life Skills and Career Opportunities Course is designed to prepare the student for life after high school. Planning for career paths and job search receives indepth coverage. Application procedures for college and other post-secondary school education opportunities are discussed. Students study career opportunities in the Air Force, to include officer and enlisted career paths, as well as career opportunities in other government agencies and the Federal Aviation Administration Leadership IV - (Open to fourth year AFJROTC cadets.) OPTION A- Management of the Cadet Group This is the senior-level AFJROTC course. It is not open to entry-level students (students who are new to the AFJROTC program). Cadets enrolled in this course have responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and controlling the cadet group. Selected cadets are placed in positions of responsibility and authority to ensure all cadet activities are properly conducted and accomplished. This aerospace science course stresses the challenge of command and staff, and career management. It also integrates and applies all previous academic and leadership instruction by requiring the cadet commander and senior staff to run all aspects of the cadets’ corps. These duties and responsibilities include command, operations, administration, personnel, awards and decorations, finance, public affairs, discipline, and resource management. OPTION B- Principles of Management Introduces students to management theory. Management process is taught, to include planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and controlling. Students are given increased opportunity to practice these skills in cadet group activities. Citizenship skills are taught, and emphasis is given to ethics, with instruction in values, morals, and culturally accepted codes of conduct. UNIFORM DAY: Cadets will be issued an AFJROTC uniform. Specific AFJROTC uniform items will be worn each Tuesday and Wednesday as designated by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI). AFJROTC Cadets are responsible for the weekly cleanliness of these uniform items. Lost or damaged uniform items are the cadet’s financial responsibility and will be noted in the student records as a student fine until paid. Uniform wear can be made up on the next school day if student forgets to wear it or has an excused absent. An unexcused absence will result in a zero for that week’s uniform wear. A rubric is available upon request. PE DAY: Cadets are required to wear VMHS AFJROTC PE gear (Issued at no cost) or VMHS PE Gear on Thursday or Friday. PE totals 100 points. 10% of overall grade will be lost if student wears improper gear. MAKEUP ASSIGNMENTS: Cadets returning from any absence are required to turn in assignments on the day of return. Late assignments due to unexcused absence (ISS & OSS are considered unexcused) will result in loss of points. PERCENTAGE OF EACH PART OF JROTC: AEROSPACE SCIENCE 25% LEADERSHIP EDUCATION 25% PHYSICAL EDUCATION 30% DRILL 10% UNIFORM WEAR 10% GRADING SCALE USED AT VISTA MURRIETA HIGH: A - 90% and above B – 80%-89% C – 70%-79% D – 61%-69% F - 59% and below CURRICULUM-IN-ACTION (CIA TRIPS): Cadets are provided opportunities to leave school on field trips. These trips may include visits to museums, Air Force installations, colleges, National Guard Units, and other places of interest. Other visits may be to local Middle Schools to recruit students for the AFJROTC Program and community service activities. Other trips will be as required to support community requests for Color Guard Presentations.
