Development of skills in reading and writing for advanced students. Focus on strategies to improve
reading speed and comrehension of academic texts and the development of an essay. May be repeated. 4 Cr. F,

The main pool of students come from new international students, as well as US citizens and
permanent residents, who are required to take the course. This course also fulfills the SCSU
requirement for Academic English Proficiency via the College ESL Program.

Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts
Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of
thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning.
Students learn to use English for academic purposes. In that process, they also learn about the
unique ways in which American academic English is used in the academic community. Learning a
foreign language and the culture associated with the target language is one of the main emphases in
Humanities and Fine Arts. For international students at SCSU, learning to develop mastery in using
American academic English is the exact equivalent of US students learning a foreign language. For
each group, the target language migth be different, but the learning goals are the same.
13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 6, it must address at least 5 of the 7 student learning
outcomes (SLOs) below. Check the SLOs below that are focused on in the proposed general education course.

demonstrate their skills.
