Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning. Students learn to use English for academic purposes. In that process, they also learn about the unique ways in which American academic English is used in the academic community. Learning a foreign language and the culture associated with the target language is one of the main emphases in Humanities and Fine Arts. For international students at SCSU, learning to develop mastery in using American academic English is the exact equivalent of US students learning a foreign language. For each group, the target language migth be different, but the learning goals are the same. 13.
