Kindergarten Newsletter Room 1 October 5, 2015 Mrs. Dowdell and Mrs. Copani Ed Smith Vision Statement : To be the most improved school in the district where every child learns and grows. Classroom News Thank you to all of the families that were able to attend Open House last Tuesday! It was a wonderful opportunity to meet everyone and share information as to what to expect in your child’s kindergarten classroom this year. If you were unable to attend, we sent home the informational packets that were passed out. Please read through them and let me know if you have any questions. This week is the first week of homework! We send homework home on Monday and would like it completed and returned by Friday. We suggest that your child do one page a day. For homework they are practicing writing numbers (with poems – they are on the back of the newsletter) from 0 to 5. We are sending home flash cards for your child to practice so they can recognize numbers to at least 10. They can use the cards to practice number recognition, putting the numbers in order and also counting objects. If your child is already fluent in recognizing numbers to 10, give them one number and ask them what number comes before that number and what number comes after it. We would also like your child to practice writing his/or her name. Handwriting is hard work. The more your child practices, the better they will get! Reminders If you have not already done so, please send in $10.00 for your child’s snack. Thank you to the families that have already contributed. School begins at 9:00. Breakfast is from 8:50 until 9:00. If your child would like to eat breakfast, please have them here at 8:50. If your child arrives after 9:00 he/she needs to get a late pass from the office. Please continue to work with your child to help him/her master self help skills such as tying shoes, zipping and buttoning jackets, etc. Our weekly specials schedule Monday – art Tuesday – music Wednesday – library Thursday – gym Friday – art *Please remember to have you child wear sneakers on gym days. Common Core Standards that we are working on this week are: * Readers answer questions (who, what, where, when, how, why) to better understand the story/nursery rhyme. *Students can identify words that rhyme. * Students hear and identify beginning sounds in words (ex. What sounds do you hear at the beginning of “fun”, “cat”, etc.) * Math- students will name shapes (triangle, rectangle, circle, square, rhombus, trapezoid, hexagon) and colors and tell where they are - using position words (above, below, beside, in front of, behind, next to). *students can count things at least to 10 and recognize and write numbers at least to 5.
