Dear Parents and Students, My name is Susan Kirkman and I am the new Services Coordinator for Upward Bound. This Thanksgiving there is a special project that I feel the students would benefit greatly from doing. It’s called The Great Thanksgiving Listen. All your student has to do is sit down with an elderly family member snap a quick photo and just talk to them. Using the app StoryCorps they will simple ask question about times long since gone. StoryCorps is downloadable on both apple and android devices and is completely free to use. Upon completion of their interview the student has the option to upload both the interview and photo to the Library of Congress database. Now, you may be asking yourself, why is this so important? As society moves forward, we tend to forget about the past. Those stories that your grandparents used to tell you as a child are slowly being lost as generations pass away. Now your child has a chance to save those stories and keep them on file with the Library of Congress for future generations to hear. You don’t have to upload your interview if you don’t wish to. To get ready for your interview first ask the person you are interviewing if it is ok to interview them. After they have given their consent come up with 5 different questions to ask them about their childhood, favorite memory, or whatever you want to ask. Remember to keep it appropriate and don’t ask anything that would make the person you are interviewing feel uncomfortable. Then when the time comes go to a quiet location and begin recording. Something important to note is you want to keep your interview under 40 minutes. If you still wish to participate, but don’t have a phone or your family is far away no worries! Simply have an interview with someone and fill out the bottom of this page. Regardless if you’re using the app or not you need to do the following to be entered into the drawing. Fill out the bottom of this page with who you interviewed, along with 5 different questions you asked. At the conclusion of your interview write down what you learned from the interview, and why interviewing is important. If you have any questions about the project or how to participate visit https://storycorps.me/about/the-great-thanksgiving-listen/.
