COMPASS AND PACING UNIT
TEACHING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Accurately measure a distance using only their pace.
2. Exhibit proficiency in the understanding of compass function and use.
3. Demonstrate the proper use of a hand held compass.
4. Identify the following items on a compass:
a. Orienteering Arrow
b. Bezel
c. Magnetic Compass Needle
d. Direction of Travel Arrow
e. Compass Housing
f. Orienteering Lines
g. Sighting mirror
h. Sighting Line
i. Base Plate
5. Give a degree reading of two points using a hand held compass.
6. Follow the direction of travel arrow on a compass and keep it aligned with
the orienting arrow on the compass housing.
7. Work together as a team to provide a degree reading and a distance
between two points.

a. Azimuth
b. Pace
c. Compass
d. Magnetic north
e. True north
f. Magnetic deviation
