Course Guidelines
The district curriculum is aligned to the Arizona State Standards for Writing and
Reading. An integrated approach is assumed for many course objectives. Components
of English are interrelated and intended to be interactive whenever possible. Multiple
assessment methods will be used to evaluate understanding and application of course
objectives. Objectives for this course will be taught to grade level mastery to ensure
appropriate articulated learning between grade levels. Students will have the opportunity
to use technology to enhance oral and written communication skills in this course.
Furthermore, students will be studying the literary elements of short stories, poetry, plays,
and the novel. In addition, students must complete the Personal Narrative assignment and
the Book Talk assignment to pass the course.
Required Text: Prentice Hall Literature: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes
Our Town by Thornton Wilder
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Materials: Paper and writing utensil
Rules: Be respectful, be courteous, and be dependable.
Grades: Semester Grades will be determined by category and weight: Homework 10%,
Tests 45%, and Essays/Projects/Assignments 45%.
Classroom Guidelines
*Students must be in class.
*Students will keep materials according to teacher specifications.
*The use of cell phones, IPODS, MP3 players, and personal electronic devices are not
permitted during class time. These items should be put away and not visible at any time.
*All students must be dressed appropriately for class.
*Food and drink are not permitted in the classroom.
*Late work will not be accepted. Exceptions may be made for major assignments.
*Students who are not in the classroom when the bell rings will be swept.
*Students who are swept must turn in any assignments that are due before 3:30pm on the
day that they are swept. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero. Also, students are
responsible for making-up all missed work when swept.
*In the event of an excused absence, it is the responsibility of the student to collect all
make-up work from the teacher and turn it in by the next class period following the
absence. Exceptions will be made for excused extended absences.
*Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Anyone caught copying an assignment or
cheating on a test will receive a zero.
*Essays will be typed, unless written neatly in pen, on one side of each page.
*Essays will have a modified MLA heading in the upper left corner of page one:

We may be watching some PG13 movies in conjunction with writing assignments.
Please sign and return this sheet through your student if you give permission for your
child to watch movies rated PG13. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the
viewing of certain materials, an alternate assignment will be provided.
